Does this coin look proof to you?

Irisj pre-decimal proofs are very hard to come by. This seller claims he has a proof 1928 1s he bought from a dealer in Long Beach. I have looked at the images he has provided, both ebay and his personal ones he has posted on his web space, and I really do not agree that this is a proof coin. I don't know what is your opinion forum friends?

I already had that on my watch list with an email into the seller for a better scan. I'll let you know when it arrives.

This was my earlier email to the seller:
    Hello,
    >Is this coin hazed over? It does not show the characteristics of a coin in
    >FDC (proof) condition. The reverse also shows a slight weak strike at the
    >upper left of the harp and in the number "1" in 1928. Maybe just the scan.
    >The seller that sold it to you was he sure this was a proof?

    Seller response:

"Hazed over is a term I haven't heard before. To use it on a proof sounds
like you are wondering if its been dipped or cleaned. The coin is a proof
as it does have a mirror surface, however it is toned which masks the proof
surface. John Stafford Langan has a great website; 'irishcoins.com', where
he goes into the 1928 proofs and restrikes, however his prices are a bit
off. As an example, I will pay $500 for 1985 halfpenny. The coin looks
original based on the toning. It looks like it has been in a box for most of
its life. Its not FDC. The coin does have some hairline scratches visable
under optics. The '1' in 1928 does look a bit weak, although all the of the
date lacks the sharpness of a truely good strike, the harp and detail to the
sound box are all there, so as a strike its about average. However this is
an early Irish silver coin and to find a FDC with a good strike would be
hard. I paid $22USD (18euro) for the coin and that wasn't a bad price. I
figure the price for a average proof should be $30 and a true FDC $75-100. I
    bought the farthing, 3d, 6d, 1s and 2s proof plus a red BU 1943 hp for $135.
I just needed the farthing (blazing red proof), 3d and 43hp, and the price
break was worth buying all his coins."

Here are the links to other pictures he has of this coin

  • Gut reaction - this coin is not a proof strike. Too weak and devices/edges are not defined well enough for a proof.

There were 6,001 proofs struck of the 1928 1s. Krause has it listed as $27.50. John Stafford-Langan Irish catalog page lists this proof at €28 or about $37.00image

I got my set from THIS GUY.

As for the shilling in question I got his larger images and I believe there are better examples out there to be had.

  • Could be a proof, could just be uncirculated. If he cannot supply you with larger and more detailed pics then I would not buy it. After all, these coins are offered once in a while. There will be another one.
