Texas moves past CAL in the BCS...

and get the Rose Bowl bid. No PAC-10/Big 10 matchup this year.

TEXAS vs. MICHIGAN

Who's gonna win it?

Comments

  • Texas SHOULD pass Cal in the BCS standings.
Cal would lose by 10 to Texas on a nuetral field.

It's too bad Cal won't be in the Rose Bowl though.

Texas - Michigan is still a great game.

I would be p!ssed if I were Cal. All this last second moving around with the BSC when nothing happens.
I'm also disappointed that the Rose Bowl won't be a Big 10/Pac 10 matchup.

The question for me will be can Michigan's D stop the Texas quarterback from running the ball. They've been terrible this
year against running quarterbacks. I'm not so much worried about their running back. We've been pretty good at stopping
    good running backs.

Texas' passing game doesn't seem like much. I'd let the strong Michigan secondary go one on one against the Texas receivers
    and LOAD THE BOX. image

  • as the biggest Texas fan on the planet, i'll try to remain objective. yeah, Cal got screwed. if Cal went, UT would have gotten screwed. it's a no win situation for the BCS. both teams are identical (in terms of being BCS "worthy"). i don't care if UT got screwed last year, that gives them no extra right to get in in 04. oh well, i'm glad they're finally in

on to the game. i've seen every UT game this year. only seen a few UMich games, but from what i've seen they're a young team. they will be bad ass in a few years when Henne gets some more experience. they did a pretty poor job of trying to contain Troy Smith, and Vince Young is similar. i don't care what anyone says, he can pass the ball. UT just has terrible wide recievers. and its not a one dimensional offense- they have, in effect, two running backs. it's hard to stop the power of Benson and the speed of VY. and Texas' defense this year is outstanding. great D line, great linebackers, and a good secondary.

this game will come down to one thing- UT's game plan. if they can create a gameplan that works to their strengths- running the ball, play action, occasional passes- they should win by 10 or more. their defense will keep them in any game, and their offense just wears opponents down. now if they come out and start throwing the ball, it'll be a long afternoon for Texas fans

    my prediction?
    UT 35
    Michigan 24

Cal got jobbed. Their only loss was to #1 USC by 6 points. Too bad their coach didn't cry, whine and beg for a BCS bowl like UT's did.

Sorry, but Cal would beat Texas not to mention Oklahoma or Auburn... and yes, they were overlooked in a big way. The only team that should be thankful is Michigan. There is no excuse for anything other than a Cal-Michigan Rosebowl...

uhh, what makes you think that Cal would beat UT? i've only seen Cal play 3 or 4 times, but they didn't impress me a whole lot. the one team they played with speed on D beat em. and beating OU? hahaha, OU would crush them by at least 14
  • How would Cal beat UT when they barely
escaped a POOR Southern Miss team ?

The only way Cal would beat UT is if UT beat themselves.

The Texas-Michigan game is a game about which team decides
to beat themselves. Neither team has shown an ability
to play 4 quarters of consistent football.
This IS NOT A GOOD GAME TO BET because you can not
read a team that is as inconsistent as these two.
Having said that, I would give Texas a small edge in this game.

The PAC 10 is not what it used to be, when Washington was great,
Stanford was strong, and Wash. St. was even good.
USC is at least a touchdown loser to OU.
  • The RIGHT thing to do would be to have
Texas vs. Cal in the Rose bowl...

and kick Michigan to the curb.
THEY are the ones that do not deserve
to be in a major BCS bowl.

a Texas - Cal game would be a good one!

Michigan typically struggles when they don't throw the ball deep to Edwards... If they don't at least try to complete a few 40+ down the field, they are SOL. For anybody who does not watch Michigan, Braylon sometimes loses focus on the short passes but has an amazing ability to come up with anything thrown to him well down the field. A perfect example of his ability was in the MSU game. If Henne doesn't just toss the ball up for grabs, they lose but Braylon wrestles 2 of his 3 TD's away from the DB's. This guy is very similar to Randy Moss is his ability to get up for the ball. Hart will also take the load off from Henne. If the game comes down to Henne throwing over 35 times, Michigan likely loses.

  • Dirtmonkey,

Watching Michigan play the past 5 year I observe
the same thing when I watch Texas.

I see VERY GOOD players making "bonehead"
    mistakes at times.

My only conclusion is that both coaches do not
stress 100% concentration in practice. It surely
    shows up on the field.

That's why I think Lloyd Carr and Mack Brown are
not in the upper echelon of college coaches. I think
    they are VERY replaceable.

When Schembechler was in charge, I saw guys execute
at a much higher level, even though the skill level was the same.

The BCS is a complete joke.

Cal lost out on over 2.5 million because some writers got it in their head that texas should be get the BCS bid.

BCS bowl system was not set up to worry about 3 on down. The rest of the system was set up by the college presidents and AD's to insure that their winner would get a big payday in a bowl. Quite frankly the old system was better. Let the pollsters i.e. AP and UPI or whoever vote like they used to. Nothing wrong with a mystical national championship or sharing it. It's still a joke without a playoff.

Those of you who think Texas would smoke Cal are nutbags. Kansas without some bad calls would have beaten Texas. Kansas for crying out loud!!!! Cal lost one game to the #1 ranked team all year but managed to outgain them 2-1. Give me a break.

I live in Big Ten country, in fact not far from Michigan and two things come mind, losses to OSU and ND. I thought Michigan improved after the ND game but the OSU game proved me wrong.

There are 2 reasons I say that Cal got jobbed. The first is that they were moved down with nothing happening (Texas didn't
even play and they won their game).

The most important reason is that the spot that was open is for the Rose Bowl and the Rose Bowl should be Big 10/Pac 10.

    >but from what i've seen they're a young team. they will be bad ass ,h]in a few[/h] years when Henne gets some more experience
I think you mispelled the word "next". image

    >this game will come down to one thing- UT's game plan.
It will be no surpise that I think the opposite. If Michigan remembers how to play run defense and Jim Herrmann reminds
his team how to contain a quarterback then Michigan should be able to handle them. If they don't Michigan still has a chance
with their wide array of offensive weapons especially chucking the ball down the field to Edwards.

I'll take Michigan and the points. image

I agree to some extent. I think Michigan can beat anybody in the country, but can also make games against subpar teams very close. ND & OSU are big rival games for them, so I was not shocked that they lost. Suprised? Yes... Should they have won? Certianly on paper. But people fail to realize that Michigan has true Freshman playing key positions... Quarterback & runningback. Henne has been fairly impressive for a freshman, but often shows his lack of maturity in decision making during a game. Hart has not shown one bit of immaturity. He runs hard, holds onto the ball and keeps the chains moving. But they did not have him in the ND game as Underwood was slated to be the starter and he got injured. Same goes for Henne... An injury to their #1 forced him into the starting role and most know you don't give a substantial amount of snaps during spring practice to a Freshman not slated to start.

Their game against OSU proved 3 things. 1) Henne is still a freshman prone to mistakes and inconsistent play. 2) Herman has a very solid defensive squad, but they need to blitz a young QB (OSU) every time on 3rd and 10+ and are suceptable to reverses because of overpursuit 3) When in doubt, THROW THE DAMN BALL up for grabs to Braylon as often as possible as he can make a play that 99% of the other NCAA receivers cannot.

  • the bowls Should be
    OK vs USC
    and
    Auburn vs Utah

that would give us the TWO
    Undefeated vs Undefeated games

and then the Rose should be
CAL vs Texas so the Two teams
with only 1 big loss could play.

Those matchups would make more sense
    to me.

I for one am getting so sick and tired of the west coast teams getting completely shafted in this stuff...people saying 'USC's overrated!' and 'Cal didn't play anyone' are the same ones who are in bed by 10pm and don't even watch the west coast teams play.

The east coast bias on sports teams in this country is just incredible...and the fact that people fail to notice it (or dismiss it if they do) amazes me even more.

You'd think that there are no sports played past the Mississippi River!
  • BKAH,

    I agree with you completely.

Let the four undefeateds go after each other and
have a split national champion this year.

    Axtell,

I understand your frustration. In my case it's nothing against west coast teams.
I used to be scared to death of Washington playing some of my favorite teams.
They were downright scary to death and got the respect from me.

My viewpoints are totally objectionable. I was rooting for Carlson Palmer to win
the Heisman because I felt he was the best player in the country last year.
I loved watching that kid throw the ball.

My viewpoints about USC being overrated this year are based on what I've seen
against Notre Dame, UCLA, and Cal. I also saw the Stanford highlights and others.
They just don't look as strong as OU and Auburn. Having said that, to say that
they are a touchdown lower than the two best teams in the country means that they
are still a very good team. No disrespect here at all.

The B(c)S in about nothing more than money. Fact is, whether you like it or not Michigan has more of a following that just about any (if not any) sports program in the country. They typically have as many Michigan fans at the Rose Bowl as there are fans of the Pac 10 school that is representing their conference. The BS (ooops, keep forgetting the C image ) hasn't cleared up anything, but to be honest nothing ever will. If you create a 8 team playoff, the ninth team will gripe stating their credentials are better than #8. If you have a 16 team playoff, #17 will gripe... It's the nature of college sports.

And BTW, if you're not playing for the National Championship, who shives a git who you play in a stupid bowl game? I didn't really care when Michigan lost the last game to OSU... I was a bit bummed, but they were going to do no better than 2nd in the polls if all played out and as they say, second place is merely the first loser.

And if you were unbiased, which game would most rather see. Michigan & Texas or Cal and Texas? Believe me, the majority would rather watch Michigan & Texas...

I was not really even advocating
a split. I think that it would be more like the
winner of the USC/OK game would be #1
    and
winner of the AU/UT game would be #2
because they would be the only Undefeated teams
(besides Boise) left in the polls, so they would be
    at the top...
but since the USC/OK is 1 and 2, the winner there would
    have to be #1.

I would love for Auburn to be #1 someday,
but this year, that is how it would make the
most sense for how it has played out.

    I agree with that.
90% of the people dogging the West coast teams
are doing so because of Exactly what you said.

10% of the people dogging the West coast teams
are doing so because they are just biased toward
their own teams and conferences so much they
are not able to have an open mind and look at the
    league objectively as a whole.

    Either way, it is wrong.

USC and Cal are good teams this year that could
whip most of the teams in the top 25 this year
on any given Saturday (and have proved it on the field!)

I'm sorry, which top 25 teams did Cal whip this year? Arizona State? Big deal. image

I apologize to all the West Coasters on behalf of everyone else. I'm sorry the earth spins the way it does and I'm sorry
you live where you live and I'm sorry that I'm usually asleep when your team is playing ball. image

The Cal offense and Defense are among the top 5 in the country. The Southern Miss game was a re-scheduled game that should have been played earlier in the season in Septemeber and if it had been 26-16 then, nobody would care. Cal has nearly dominated every game that they have been in this year and could have beat USC...IT WAS THAT CLOSE. Cal was shafted in a very big way.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I stand corrected...

    CAL vs. Top 25 teams
    October 9 at No. 1 USC L 23-17
    October 30 No. 21 Arizona State W 27-0

    Texas vs Top 25 teams
    October 9 at No. 2 Oklahoma L 12-0
    October 16 No. 24 Missouri W 28-20
    October 23 at No. 24 Texas Tech W 51-21
    November 6 No. 19 Oklahoma State W 56-35
    November 26 No. 22 Texas A&M W 26-13

I think the real losers are Cal and the Rose Bowl. A Big 10/Pac 10 matchup would at least created national interest in the game. Now you simply have a co-Big Ten Champ and a Big 12 runner up. I suppose the Rose Bowl won't be hurting, but I won't be watching.
  • khaysekhayse Posts: 1,336
Except that it's Michigan and Texas so plenty of people will be watching.

And I have 2 tickets. image

  • #1 winningest college football program vs. #3 winningest college football program. yeah, i'm sure no one is gonna care
  • Texas vs. Michigan is AWESOME !!!

Remember when Nebraska got killed by Miami, Fla
in the Rose Bowl a few years back ?

    The ENTIRE stadium was red.

Texas and Michigan have as big (if not bigger)
following then Nebraska. The game is HUGE !!!
  • well cal is showing exactly why they did not deserver to be in the rose bowl. texas tech is killing them right now 31-17 and it is getting ugly fast! they sucked a few weeks ago against a mediocre southern miss team, now they suck big time against this tt team.
  • VarghaVargha Posts: 2,392 ✭✭
Cal blew it. I was wrong.
  • they got killed by my school. heh
  • VarghaVargha Posts: 2,392 ✭✭
    That's "Heh©".
  • The PAC-10 is down this year.

The PAC-10 has had awesome teams in the past, just not this year.

I've been saying all along that Auburn and Oklahoma are the two
best teams in the country, and after January 4th, you'll see why.

And I'll say it again, if you have a bookie, bet all you want
on Oklahoma. It should be over by the 3rd quarter. You can
just sit back and enjoy your winnings in the 4th.

    Oklahoma 7 7 7 10
    USC 7 3 3 7

  • Oh by the way,

Texas would have beat Cal last night even worse.
Texas punished Texas Tech this year.

Texas is a VERY GOOD football team this year.
Losing only 12-0 to Oklahoma is an accomplishment.

Texas-Michigan is a great rose bowl game.
Texas should win by 7 if all goes as it should.
  • IrishMikeIrishMike Posts: 7,737 ✭✭✭
Great game and great teams. Our memories are short aren't they. Texas barely beat such powerhouses this year as Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Michigan lost to Notre Dame, beat San Diego State by 3, Minnesota by 3, Purdue by 2, and lost their last game of the season to OSU.
Good teams yes, great teams, I don't think so.
  • joestalinjoestalin Posts: 12,473 ✭✭
Cal...what a waste..they should drop out of the top 25 for this loss. This is why we SHOULDN"T
have a playoff...too many pretend teams. Its a good thing that Boise St and Louisville played
because both of their defenses suck, and if they actually had to play real teams with
real defenses they would get exposed!

In the next few days we shall see which teams are full of hot air!
