My first post on the dark side . . . coin found in change

I was going through my pocket change jar rolling all of my change and happened upon this!

How rare is it to find Nazi coinage in your change?????

Mine is identical to this one (1939), but has an "A" under the number instead of the "J" shown in the picture.

  • A is the mint. I think A is one from Berlin.

I've certainly never found a Third Reich coin in my change before, but i do kinda collect these in a non serious, passive kinda way. Well i accumulate them.

Usually because they're Zinc (the 40s ones are), but i think in 1939 it should be copper?

Well, I've never heard of it before. Probably some kid spent his great-granddad's war souvenir. The 'A' is indeed the mintmark, that for Berlin. This 1939A 1 Reichspfennig coin was made of bronze and over 97.5 million were made -- the largest year/mint issue of this type coin (cataloged by Krause as KM-89). In Unc., it would go for about $5, but only $0.50 in XF.

Which German coins bearing the swastika are silver?
  • The 5 mark and 2 mark coins.

The 5 mark coin is of higher purity than the 2 mark coin.
  • The 2 and 5 mark are silver. 2 = 0.6250 and the 5 = 0.9000

The other bizzare thing is that I also found two Canadian cents in the pile also . . . dated 1940!

If the coins are 90% silver or 62% silver....how much do they weigh...ie...what is the actual silver content in each coin?
  • DMWJRDMWJR Posts: 6,010 ✭✭✭✭✭
The letter after the date is the mint mark, followed by the number minted. The rest is a value guide in EURO.

The 1940 Canadian cents likely came from the same source and makes me even more certain that my guess as to their origin was correct.

  • I've been buying junk world coins by the pound and without exception always end up with 2-6 pcs of WWII german coinage. My guess is there is alot of them still out there floating around about as common as wheat pennies in pocket change now a days. Just on observation on what I've been seeing lately.
