A nice addition! You're no more nuts than any of the rest of us Merc collectors who wish we had a '16-D.

    Congrats!

I saw a 16-D recently that was about AG-3, with part of the D worn off. I've seen these slabbed in holders, but I can't for the life of me tell how the services know it is a D instead of an S. Any advice???

I would stay away from coins you can't tell what the mint mark really is.

On an "S" coin you should be able to tell the upper left side of the mint mark is rounded and the right side has the serrif (tail) or kind of square looking on really worn out coins.

On a "D" coin the upper left should be squared, and the upper right should be rounded. There are only four dies for the "D" so I would suggest finding a book with the information and learn the four mint marks as to position and style. The "D" mint marks are really hammered into the dies, so they sould be easy to see as you can note by the coin below. Between lookin at the AU50 and the two coins below, you will see two of the four dies.

Here is a different die in AG03 to compare it to.

And a VG08 the same die as the coin above.
