Double Die Washington? Now I see it.....Now I don't

I just opened a original roll of 1948-D quarters and while inspecting I noticed doubling around "In God We Trust", strongest on the
"O" and "D". The majority of the roll appeared to be the same. So, I decided to view under some stronger lighting and the doubling seems to disappear. I searched some auction archives and looked at some 48-D DDO's and don't see the doubling on them either. Is this just an illusion from the lower lighting or is the strong lighting to much to show the doubling?

Anybody familiar with this variety?

Sometimes you can only see the doubling at very oblique angles. You might try maneuvering the light angle around and see what you see.

Are you sure that it isn't strike doubling Randy? Strike doubling will "disappear" when looked at from one side and "reappear" when looked at from the opposite angle.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I have tried different lighting and all different angles. In softer lighting it looks like a true double die, not machine or strike doubling. The "D" is the most pronounced. When I view it under a strong light it almost disappears , you have to have it at a certain angle and you can just see a bit of it. When looking straight at it in high lighting the doubled areas seem to have the strongest light reflection. I don't know...maybe its just my eyes.image
