Anyone who attended the Ft. Wash show, what did you think? buy?

I thought it was pretty good, tons of vintage; graded and raw. Almost all graded vintage was priced somewhat to well over SMR (PSA 6 and up), I guess to be expected, but with EBay (and you can hear them talking about what x went for on EBay) it's hard to shell out the extra money for something you that you can find there. Deals can be had though if you look and negotiate hard enough. Although some dealers seemed to be ignoring me and my friend at times at the higher profile tables, I guess they thought we were just window shoppers. One guy lost a sale that way, when I inquired about his 1963 Topps Pete Rose (RC), my main focus of the show, and, with no one else around, took me 5 tries to get his attention. Once I did he wouldn't budge on what I thought was a high price for the card (his rite); he even tried to steer me to the Rose's mid 70's stuff instead image . I ended up finding and buying it about an hour later.

The 707 table was nuts, it was practically a whole aisle of graded vintage heaven... if I only could hit the lottery. Anyway I ended up picking up the aforementioned Rose, Stargell RC, some stuff from MJ Roop, Niekro RC, and some commons for my 63 & 72 Topps sets. How about you guys?

    can we see?
    Good for you.

  • Absolutely.... They are both PSA 7s, which I chose because I liked their centering, especially the Rose. You will see an upper right chipped edge on the Rose, but the centering/price won me over.

    63 Rose

    63 Stargell

I only scanned the fronts, if you would like to see the backs I will add them.

Nice cards. Does anyone know why PSA lists the players on the Rose flip, but not on the Stargell. The inconsitency in things like this is really frustrating, huh?

  • Agreed. I prefer the names listed out.

Great report and those were really nice cards - the centering on the Rose is real nice. What dpi do you have your scanner at; I'm pretty sure you didn't resize the pic - I could practically see the nose hairs on Rose!LOL
The Fort show looks like a keeper....to my knowledge, there is nothing like it in my area. Were they asking smr on the PSA 7's? Just curious.
    Thanx for sharing!

  • I went; it was the first card show I've been to in at least ten years.

My goal was to acquire the 50 cards I needed to complete my '53 Topps set. I had gotten into the high 30s on the registry, and now I'm motivated to complete the set so I can focus on the '38 Goudeys.

Initially, I approached a dealer who had two raw '53 high numbers I needed; his price for the two was $200 and one was a DP. Shocked, I thanked him and walked away (I've been getting nice high numbers on Ebay for $40 or so). I wandered and picked up a few raw '53s, and then I discovered the booth of Cooperstown Sports Cards. WOW! I bought about seven or eight PSA 6 low numbers from Tony at a nice price, then walked away. After an hour or so, I went back to his booth and went bananas; at the end of the day I had purchased about 25 PSA 6s from him (including a large amount of high numbers), and a PSA 5 Mays and Berra. What a great guy to deal with; I spent a lot of money, but he was really trying to help me out.

I'm down to 15 cards needed to complete the set now, and I'm sitting at #26 on the registry.

'38 Goudeys were tougher to come by. There were a handful at the show (707 had a bunch, but after I dropped all that cash at the Cooperstown booth, I didn't have the stomach for another huge purchase). I found that dealers were extraordinarily high priced on '38 Goudeys, so I bought a wooden archive box from MJ Roop, an '81 Fleer wax box from another guy, and then I split.

Very impressed by the show, but I'll continue to buy the '38 Goudeys raw on Ebay.

One dealer mentioned to me that a guy came through the show on Friday and bought a lot of dealers' '38 Goudeys, which was why there were so few today when I went. Was that you, JERO?

As to what info is on the flip,
it's my understanding that whatever info is put on the submssion form,
is simply entered into a computer by a data entry person and that's the info that shows up on the flip.

By the way, very nice 7's. image

  • Mike - 90% of everything I looked at was above SMR; this includes anything graded 6 and up. Snider, Berra, Rose, Mays, Aaron, Koufax, and so on in any of the grades I mentioned were consistently 10%-25% over SMR, with most negotiating leaving you at or about SMR, and it wasn't like there was a shortage of these cards at the show.

At the 707 table they had the NM 7 Rose for $950 and another stand had a GAI 8 (I had to look) for, hope you are sitting down, $2500!!!! I personally thought mine was nicer too. In the end I was fortunate enough to get it for a little less than SMR. The Stargell was about 10% over, but I thought it was a really sharp card, so I got it. There was also a beautiful 59 Topps Bob Gibson, in NM 7, and I had the kid in the candy store thing going. Great centering, strong color, I would think could easily pass for an 8, but I couldnt go 20% over SMR. Although I suspect that SMR on that card is a little low. Still I was tapped when I saw it and I had to resist the plastic. I will kick myself, but there are others out there and this is a marathon not a sprint; I will keep telling myself that as long as I can stand it.

There was a lot of Raw vintage out there as well, and a lot of it not junk with deals to be had. You can literally spend the entire weekend there. If I had more time I might have taken a shot on some raw, maybe next time.

    Amen to that Chris
That is one of the biggest mistakes we make...there will always be another one on ebay or at a show. I have been putting a set together psa 8 and have done it at 67% smr with about 30% completion by picking my shots...eventually, I will come up with cards that will cost me a bit more but if one is patient, the reward is there IMO.
    Good luck

  • One more thing of note from the show... GAI was everywhere. I would say vintage made up 75% of the show, 50% of which had graded material and the spread between PSA and GAI was closer than you would think, with SGC was noticably behind - I don't count BGS/BVG for vintage.

    Surprising?
  • Al,

I about fell over reading your post on the 38 Goudeys at the Ft. Wash show. That wasn't me buying them up. LOL! Do you have a set on the registry for the 38's yet? There has been an increase in activity lately on the registry... The 38s are WAY more scarce than SMR would lead you to believe. There are less than 1,800 TOTAL graded. Many dealers that do have them want waaaay over SMR for them. What kills me is PSA grades raw cards very tough due to the brittleness of the cardboard, stains, toning, etc... this is what makes it very hard for me to pay in the SMR 6 range for raw cards. Which is what alot of dealers are trying to get. I think i'm going to invest in a 10x loop to look at these real soon. My goal is to get a set essentially in any grade (preferably 4-6), then replace lower graded ones as i find them. I'm afraid if you miss out one one trying to save a buck, it could be months if not years to find another. Watching ebay, it seems the price for stars graded 4-5-6, is very strong over SMR, but the number of buyers for 6-7 commons is a bit thinner, but of course the price goes up exponentially over 6. The Foxx and especially the Feller cards are going for WAAAY over SMR. A Feller "2" recently went for over $350. There are almost 20 9's on the registry and I still have not seen or heard of a single PSA 9 selling or even on a set registry yet. One guy at the Chicago show had a GAI joe-D heads up that was a 6.5 for $4,000. It was the highest priced 38 at the show and it was the only 38 he had.

    No Chris
In fact, that could start a debate that could go into the night...I do not frequent shows so I'm not one to speak but from what I have read here and other places, GAI seems to be reeeeeeeeeeeeally dealer friendly. I hope that is not true. There is no place to go but down when the graders know "whose" cards they are handling, IMO. I have a few GAI cards and the grading looks similar to PSA. Others have felt that GAI is too lenient I believe.
Well, if anyone is still awake...

  • JERO:

I don't have a set on the registry - I only have one graded card, a Gehringer that's graded BVG-2.

I'm scarfing up raw cards in any condition. I have half the set, but need both DiMaggios, both Fellers and both Foxxes. I've got a few I bought from Colorado Sports Cards that will grade very nice, but I would imagine the rest would go in the 3 range. I will probably send in the 24 I have after the holidays.

I'm shocked at how few of these cards there really are out there. Even 707 didn't have that many of them at the show today, mostly DiMaggios, very high priced. A lot of dealers looked at me like I was crazy. Unfortunately, the few '38s I saw today, I either already have or they were priced so high above SMR (and the dealers didn't want to come down), it was ridiculous.

One guy wouldn't budge from $400 on a VG Foxx. A Foxx went on Ebay yesterday for $115. I'll stick to Ebay and wait for the ones I need come around.

Then I'll snipe 'em from you. image

Also a nice report on the show. Your first in 10 yrs.; I haven't been in a while. Need to get out more! Does everyone bring a book with them to mark down where they saw stuff - I found that very helpful when I went to shows with 5-800 tables. I think if you can get to know some of the veterans at the Registry forum, they can be helpful to you with your 38G set. Are there many people collecting that set here?
    Good luck on your hunt.

  • Thanks, Mike.

Thus far, JERO is the only other person on these boards that I'm aware of that's working on the '38 set.

Although I only very recently started contributing here.

I think it's a gorgeous set, PLUS I am ready for a set with only 48 cards. The '61s and '59s I was working on were starting to frustrate me with their size, so I put them aside for a while and started the '38s. I started with zero, and have been gobbling up everything I can on Ebay. That I've only got 24 cards, and I've been bidding on virtually everything, is a testament to the fact that they rarely come up, and when they do, there's a lot of activity on them.

Any time you search for them on Ebay, you'll get only one page of results, and half of them are reprints. So there's really only one card a week or so, and then once in a while someone will put up ten or twelve. The prices get ridiculous, even for the off-grade cards. However, as JERO says, MOST of them are off-grade; they're all toned and chipped with round corners. Finding a nice one is difficult and expensive. So I'll take your advice and dig a little deeper on the other boards.

    Thanks,

As I said, the guys over at the registry forum may have extras or left-overs from upgrades etc.
I was curious, and as you said, there are a ton of reprints offered which means there are a ton of reprints being passed off as legit. I did find a guy with a load but all are BIN with no bidding.

Wouldn't mind having the DiMaggio in this grade! image

  • Yea, the ones for the BIN are from wvshoeboxcards. Wayne is a really nice guy and I have purchased several from him and i chatted with him at the chicago show last month. The 5's on ebay are 50% over SMR, the 6 is not bad at 20% over and the 7's are about as fair as well. Unfortunately if I had another grand to burn I would snag them all up and smile, but its x-mas so i'm burning cash right and left as it is. I loved the 52 topps set and the 38 goudeys as a kid (i'm 30) so when I got back into cards a few years ago, i went for the 52 topps set. Low and behold after getting 450 out of the aklmost 500 cards in a master set i gave up and moved to the 48 card goudey set. Sold almost all the 52 high numbers individually already, but have a 1-310 master set plus a couple high numbers and the page error on ebay ending tonight. If it meets the very reasonable reserve i'll snag a few 38s from wvshoebox for sure... we'll see...

Gai does whatever it takes to get their cards on dealer tables. I would say that a majority of the Gai
cards are collected by dealers not collectors. When the Gai registry opens on Monday you can bet that
many of the sets will be from either dealer inventory or the big boys who were crossed from Psa without
    a real review.
