K-237 WHO IS TO BLAME? (Wer is der Schuldige?), 1919, Cast AE, 58.8mm, Choice UNC.
Based on the statements made in an article by Dr. G. Wegener in the Cologne Gazette showing that the former Kaiser had sought to escape responsibility for bringing on the war (WWI). He tried to shift the blame to Berthmann-Hollweg, the former Imperial Chancellor. Letters written by the Imperial princes, also tried to convey the impression that Wilhelm II was blameless.
Obverse, Clemenceau, as teacher, asks in exergue “Who is the Guilty?” The princes fight to proclaim their guilt in the Legend “I – I – No I, I also, We all. July 6, 1919.”
Reverse, Bethmann-Hollweg in the attire of a porter before an Allied court consisting of Judges Wilson, Clemenceau, Lloyd George “Mr. Criminal, I am reporting” (*). Inscription as legend “Loafer Nante in court.” (This scene was taken from a one-act play of the same title. Nante being the name of an old Berlin original character famed for his witty remarks.)
(*) Mr.Criminal is a translation of German phrase “Herr Kriminell”, which is derived from the title Kriminalrat (Detective Superintendent) and is used in the crooks jargon, colored by the Berlin dialect.
