Anybody Ever Try Acetone Or Xylene On Zinc?

I have some zinc coins with some crud and some of hte white corrosion residue on them. Does acetone or xylene help with this stuff? Will acetone or xylene bother the zinc? If nobody knows then I guess I will just have to experiment on one.

  • That white residue IS the coin. It's just a different form of rust.

  • I hate to get technical here, but Zinc Oxide is not rust and not a different type of rust. Like rust it's corrosion, but rust is another name for Iron Oxide. Since Zn isn't Fe...

Question though is ZnO progressive corrosion or protective corrosion? I know they use Zn to galvanise so surely one it's all gone white on the surface would it stop it reacting any more beneath?
