ARE '78 TOPPS BASEBALL WORTH THE GRADING FEES??

I have about 60 very clean 1978 Topps baseball cards(mainly commons) that I had put on the side when I had thoughts about building this set.I think they would all grade 8's and 9's without a problem.I'm just not sure if there is a strong enough interest where I would make back my fees and maybe a little profit.
Selling them ungraded will be tough but they are really nice and were hand picked after someone I know ripped a rack case.
They are worthy of grading but I just don't want to lose money on the deal.
Any input??

If they will only 8 and 9 - they are not worth the grading fee.

If they will 9 and 10 - they probably will. There may be some commons/stars that will do okay in 9s - but it is not a guarantee. Sometimes some do great, and sometimes they do sucky.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Check the pop report. If any of your commons are pop 5 or below in PSA 9, then go for it. If they're the usual suspects, pop 20+, then save your money.

I can tell you this much: if any of your commons are #165 - 221 - 330 - 347 - 481 - 506 - 538 - 563 - 642 - 724 (plus a few other noteworthy ones), and any one of them looks to you as if it would grade out a "9," submit the bunch. Some of us Registrants would pay you dearly for them!
  • I will have to look and see what I have.
  • with 78 topps bb you have to be careful, i only submit cards that i think i have a shot at a psa 10. on my last sub i think i got got 4 10's 10 or 12 psa 9's and an 8. the eight was a steve carlton so i took a shot.
i have hundreds of cards from the 78 set that MAY be 9's but i'm gun shy with them because at this point, even if half of them make a nine, i could still do better by "bottomfeeding" 9's and 10's off ebay.
of course when i get to the final 30-40 cards my thinking may change but i'm working on the set at a VERY casual pace so it may be years before i decide to pull the trigger on alot of my raw 78's....if ever.

Only if you have a keen eye for grading and honestly think that the cards will likely grade 10.

    Worth is a relative term.
It may not be worth the cost & time to submit if you plan to sell them, you will probably lose a few dollars, unless as stated you have the low pops or the PSA-10 grades in abundance.
But if you are a collector, and want to have cards graded & slabbed that you personally picked out or cards that you've had for awhile to place it in your set. It may be totally "worth" it.
Among other things, I collect is Baseball display pieces, I have framed and matted a few items where that cost exceeded the cost of the item thats perserved, it was worth it to me to do so...jay
