1956 set at 8.96 GPA !!!

Ruby's 1956 set has recently upgraded via two commons from an 8 to a 9. Results in a final average of 8.96 !!! To me this is a truly outstanding collection.

I do really enjoy the 56 set and have two ungraded complete, the better one probably 6.5 at best if slabbed. The card size, the age of the set, the player selection, unnumbered checklists, and so on, make this a great challange. I do wish the owner Mr. / Ms. Ruby might post here with some insight on this beauty.

A quick check of the registry shows this is the highest grade average of any major issue baseball set from the " Golden age" ( roughly 1951 thru 1967 ) up to the 1965 set which I believe is at 8.98.

Do any others feel this might just be the best major complete baseball set on the entire registry ? It is quite hard to compare eras , realative difficulty, price, and so many other factors, but maybe this one is a worthy top choice ?

  • I would say that is truly amazing. BUT , isn;t there always a big butt? There was an immaculate, giant find of 1956 topps cards at one point. Not to knock it, but you asked about factors. More high grade 56 topps are aroung than lets say.....55 topss. (ok I'm a little baised)

My understanding is that "Ruby" is in fact an advanced collector out of the Northeast who has bought and sold NUMEROUS sets and unopened packs/boxes over the past few years. The set is truly amazing - and I believe it is the first one that "Ruby" has ever listed on the registry. That being said - the sets has has put together over the past 5-10 years have been truly phenomenal. I applaud his efforts.

P.S. In terms of comparison - I think it is a bit of comparisng apples to oranges. Charlie's 1952 Topps set from the same era is phenomenally consistent and high-grade. I would choose that.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Aww, why'd you have to go and bring up this set. Yesterday I was content with PSA 4's and 5's. Now I see this and I want to piece together something nice. Quality or quantity? I can NEVER decide. image

Ruby's '56 set absolutely deserves best set of the year - that thing is fricking incredible. I don't know if I could ever get any work done if I had that set to look at all day.

Find or no find, a 48 year old set at 8.96 is an AMAZING feat.
Collecting all graded Alan Trammell graded cards as well as graded 1984 Topps, Donruss, and Fleer Detroit Tigers

    I agree!
that grade average is nice for a 1970's set, but for a 1950's set its nothing short of amazing! ...jay

"Ruby" listed a 61-62 Fleer Basketball set at least a year ago that was all PSA 9. He held the lead for a while but eventually John Branca's set took first place.
  • anybody have more info or a link to the story on the 1956 "find"? I keep hearing about it but was wanting some more specifics if possible.
  • Mark: you mentioned not knowing how you'd get any work done if you had this set to look at all day. Well, I'm at work. And I'm not getting anything done.

I don't know who Ruby is, but if by chance you're reading this thread, i give you serious props.

8 PSA 10 GEM MINT cards in that set, two of them being Sandy Koufax and Hank Bauer. That's just sick. There was so many 9's in there it had my head spinning.

75 Toppsguy posted a question I'd love to hear the answer to as well...the details on this (recent?) '56 find, I love stories about vintage finds.
