  • Well, he still didn't admit anything. It bothers me that sealed papers were leaked. From what I understand this is a federal crime. It seems like they were trying to smear Bonds, but got Giamb.
  • you're delirious if you think steroids will matter, bonds has one of the most disliked personalities in decades, and he's maintained his following. his public opinion really can't drop any further. mcgwire was using a now banned substance too back in the day. if i had the cash, i'd load up on bonds stuff. in ten years it will all be forgiven and forgotten.

I don't like the man, and it really pisses me off that he will pass Ruth and Aaron. But, all the roids in the world can't help ya SEE the ball and HIT the ball ...... that takes talents of which strength does not matter. You want to argue bat speed? That still can't help you positon the barrel of the bat on the ball. Keep your Bonds memorabila .....

The last thing from my mind will be to hold on to my "Barry Bonds" stuff for ten years until it re-evaluates basis whatever. Dump it. He's a scourge. I regret what I have.

I watched about 8 of his auctions tonight and saw no indication that bidding had decreased. An '86 fleer update BGS 8.5 that was at ~9.99 this morning closed at around $42, which is more than it usually sells for. One guy listed 4 or 5 '86 fleer update bgs 8.5's at the same time (never a good idea), but they all finished at or above the avg. sales price (which is around $31-$32). They were also very low this morning, meaning the bids took place today.

If his cards are going to drop solely because of this, I would expect it to happen right off the bat when buyers are the most "scared." If his cards don't drop substantially in the next few weeks, they're not going to between now and April.

However, if he sucks next year, then that's a different story. Then, rightly or wrongly, everyone will say he can't play without the juice and his cards will decrease. But that happens to all player that have a slump (see mcgwire, sosa, and griffey).

I'll agree with Dunar....I cant stand the guy but all will be forgotten. No asterisk next to his home run total. Who knows, maybe his knees will crumble to dust before he reaches the record due to taking steroids. Now THAT would ironic but not impossible. There will continue to be his followers and the followers will continue to suck up every piece of Bonds memorabilia they can find. For myself, owning any of his cards makes me want to vomit....but to each their own. I guess there are others who may say the same thing about the Mantle memorabilia I have.
Knees crumbling to dust....right there at home plate....oh yeahhhhhhh

If Bonds' cards were stock, I'd be taking short options left and right and getting rich from the few people who still stand behind the guy or who think they can get a good deal on his cards today.

Those of you who think this will eventually be forgiven and forgotten are dreaming... we've only just had a glimpse at the tip of the iceberg.

And for those of you who think Bonds will break Ruth's and Aaron's home run record, I think you too are also dreaming.

I don't think Barry Bonds will ever step into a major league batting box again. The public already had the nuse tied around his neck, with this news, the media just hung it higher and kicked out the stool. Bonds is toast. His career as he knew it is over. His statistics are tainted, his recent accomplishments and awards are now meaningless, and there is no chance he could possibly deal with what he would have to face if he came back to play. The guy is rich, he's 41 and he's not going to let a game drive him insane - which it undoubtedly would at this point. Not to mention the death threats he would receive when he approached those record home runs, similar to those Hank Aaron received when eclipsing Ruth, but for a different reason. Announcement of his retirement will be forthcoming, within 2 weeks is my guess.

If you have his cards and some sucker is willing to pay yesterday's book price for them, SELL, SELL, SELL and do it quick before the buyer realizes he's buying the equivalent to a lump of coal.

If anything, the steriods have allowed Barry to stay in the league longer, but I don't think they make him the awesome hitter he is. He is one of the most pateint hitters of all time. He's got such a great batting eye and draws more walks than anyone I have ever seen. Barry hasn't done anything that hundreds of other players in baseball, football, hockey and basketball have been doing for years. The owners kept thier mouths shut when McGwire and Sosa put baseball back on the map and made the owners millions. But now they act like steroids is something new and they've turned on the players. Its such a joke.

I think Bonds' ego is so HUGE that he won't care what anyone thinks. He will continue to deny deny deny and will go on to break that record. I think that record means everything to him, just as the single season HR record did. Even then there was the steroid controversy....it's still here and he is still playing ball. I still say no matter what comes out, his ego is big and he thinks he is bigger than the game.
Though I think what is going on with Giambi is more sad, he did make his own bed. One thing that I just dont get....it's not like everyone didnt know there were players taking illegal steroids. It would just be foolish and naive to think that all pro ballplayers are clean. Im not saying this because Im a Yankee fan...but I hope Giambi gets back on track, away from steroids, and plays his heart out. Even if it isnt with the Yankees.
I was watching the Yanks network YES and some douchebag was saying that Giambi will never be able to step out on a baseball field ever again. That is just crazy.
Yes, there should be tough punishments for steroid users and yes there should be a lot more testing...but I dont think banning a player for life is the way to go. I never saw Strawberry or Gooden get banned for life for snorting lines and lines of coke. Even more so, these guys need a chance to clean up and go prove themselves.
One thing that does suck about that last statement...Bonds' career is nearing it's end...I dont think we will ever be able to see him play "unenhanced" and prove himself.

actually they DO make one see better!
Money is your ticket to freedom.
  • Yes they do make one see better, and yes they do increase bat speed. Yes they do make one a better hitter. No, they don't turn Mario Mendoza into Mike Schmidt. But they turned Barry Bonds into Ruth. Yes Barry Bonds was a lock Hall of Famer before he took roids. No, Barry isn't a Ruthian Hall of Famer as his numbers suggest, for that is a mirage helped by the roids and other things. That is the bottom line.

His card values rest on him breaking Aaron's record. If he falls short, his card prices will drop.

I'm still wantin' to see that Photoshopped Reggie Jackson "Mary-Jane" rookie that you posted a long time ago.

    Single Season Home Run Record

    * Denotes Separate Record

    *Bonds 73 with illegal drugs
    *Mcgwire 70 with legal drugs
    *Sosa 66 with corked bat
    *Maris 61 in 162 games
    *Ruth 60 in 154 games
    Jimmie Foxx 58

Well, here it is several days after the Bonds news, and I just checked the auctions ending tonight for 1987 Fleer Bonds. They seem to be bidding up to the same levels as before the news. I'll float a few out there myself and see what happens.

Either it will be a delayed reaction, or Bonds buyers just don't care. Maybe Bonds already equals steroids (along with a**hole and other words) in these folks' minds, and it doesn't matter very much. Look at Pete Rose, his rookie card is still one of the key and most expensive cards of the last 50 years. People still collect all his other cards, too.

I guess notoriety is never a bad thing when it comes to cards. As somebody said once, "Just make sure they spell my name right."
  • A761506A761506 Posts: 1,309 ✭✭✭
Pete Rose's accomplishments were legitimate, it was his poor decisions after he left the game as a player that have him where he is today. Rose is still recognized as legendary for his play. Bonds can go on and break any record and they will never be thought of as legitimate accomplishments. Bonds cards will depreciate significantly, with little future upside. Rose cards have tons of future upside, as there has been ongoing speculation that he could be reinstated. And with this whole fiasco with the steroids, I really like Rose's chances of reinstatement in the future. Baseball will have a difficult time justifying that what Rose did was worse than what these guys have done. Rose didn't play in the games that he was betting on, but the juiced up players directly affect the outcome of every single game they were in.

    jrdolan,

Its early. The news is trickling out. As others have said, his records are tainted. Someone will talk.

Checking current auctions is meaningless. It is the long term value, which will sink.

Most paid high and will sell low.

Witness the collective cringe when he breaks Aarons record. Watch the embarrassed TV networks as they try and figure out how to cover it.

It will become a big expose on roids. Ouch. Poor MLB. No celebration there!

Hasn't Barry just been wonderful for the game? Isn't it great to see someone give back!

And dont give me the McGuire moral equivelence crap...its image baby...and pineapple head has blown it.
