Lowest Grade Received? - Unopened, Then Opened, and Submitted

I just got a 6 on a Billy Williams 1975 mini. The card was well centered, pulled straight from a previously unopened (as far as I know) wax pack, and then submitted to PSA.

For curiosity's sake, what is the lowest grade anyone has ever received for a card pulled from a previously unopened vintage wax pack?

Thanks in advance for any input.

  • well a surface wrinkle drops a card to atleast a 5, a crease can drop it to a 4, maybe a 3.... both of which can be created at the factory... also print marks, ink smears, etc can help drag it down as well... but i'd bet a 4 MK OC is as low as you go straight from a legit pack.

Not if you buy those repackaged X-mas rack packs, the highest grade you may get is a PSA 4 PD OC image

Before I knew better, I submitted and got a 4 on a "67 Jim Bunning. That was on my first submission. I didn't see the crease until I got it back. I pulled the card and thought it was mint. Haha!! Hoho!!
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

I opened a 1974 Topps wax pack and pulled a SWEET Reggie Jackson...MINIMUM 8 and I thought there was no way it wouldnt hit a 9....anyway, got it back a 7!!!!! I still dont know to this day why it only got a 7 and I have been pretty decent at guessing my grades. Oh well...I broke it out and sold it raw for book. It's probably been resubmitted and floating around somewhere in a 9 holder....oh well!
  • Thanks for the great responses. It does seem like it's a likely loaded crap shoot with unopened, uncertified vintage wax packs.

I wonder if a GAI 9 or better vintage wax pack would yield better results. Any experiences with opening GAI high graded packs and submitting those cards to PSA?

Thanks again for the helpful insight.
