What would you rather have?

A hi end (for the grade) EX card or a card that is Nmnt but OC?

Are corners more important then centering?

centering is a manufacturing defect, while soft, rounded and dinged corners more times then not are man-made.

Like others I have at least a few EX 5 cards that are more appealing then some 7's.
Good for you.

I'll take the lower graded card with better centering every timeimage

To me, centering is the most important, as long as the overall condition is still decent.

I'm on the other side - I'll take sharp corners over centering. I like cards to be clean and as close to pack fresh as possible. As you pointed out Steve, centering is not a function of abuse, where corner dings are.

  • Im with Mark.

I try for both the razor sharp, centered cards to go for 8's, 9's and 10's.

But to select one, give me razor corners and sharp edges any day and Ill live with the centering.

Good question and there will be a lot of different opinions...mine is based on overall quality - I don't mind a great PSA8 OC if I still like the way it looks and the price is right. I have noticed with the set I am collecting right now...if one can accept 60/40 centering, a PSA 8 will usually go for 60-70% SMR while a centered card will bring 1-2X SMR! I would rather spread around my budget.
Now if I were super rich like Davillilo and accumulating 100 PSA8+ sets...well then maybe I would shoot for centering and corners.

Not very close Mark....I have 52T cards but not set collecting; I was referring to the 63 set I am doing.

  • I am with the sharp corners group. Centering is not so much an issue as long as it is not as far as miscut. I think the set registry deduction for OC cards has put a real stigma on them but that means you can get them a lot cheaper.

For me, I prefer sharp corners for the same reasons you guys stated.

Sure, I rather have both sharp corners and perfect centering, but I also have to look at my budget and really consider how important a few micron of off centering really matters in the big scheme of things, especially on expensive card.

When it came to buying the 1984 Donruss Andy Van Slyke card, I shelled out big money to have a perfect copy. It happened to be a PSA 10 and it was a perfect PSA 10. I paid less than $20 for it. I am sure a PSA 8 would have been cheaper, but maybe just $10. A $10 difference is not going to deter me from getting the best. If it was a difference of $500, then I'd easily opt for the 40-60 centering. I bought a very solid Molitor rookie in PSA 8 (almost perfect centering, no smudge, sharp all around) for under $65. The PSA 9 was for over $300 and it did not look better. No brainer there as well.

My initial question was OC as in 80/20 or worse centering. Im debating the shap corners with crappy centering or ex/mnt quality corners and decent 60/40 centering.....

Yup, that's what I thought you meant - I'd take 90/10 with sharp corners over 60/40 with fuzzy corners.

  • For me, it depends on the set. If the card's borders are very thin, then centering becomes more important. However, if the borders are on the thicker side (like T99), then I'm willing to trade centering for sharp corners ...
