CladKing's advice needed on potential acquisition of clad quarters.

I have been given an opportunity to acquire a number of raw mint state clad quarters (about 80 coins)from 1965 to the mid 1990's; and a number of raw proof clad quarters ( about 20 coins) from a dealer. I have briefly looked at the coins. They intrigue me since I have been spending a little time putting together a clad quarter set.

The price quoted on the mint state quarters is $33.00 (No price quote has been made yet on the proofs. Some of the proofs (1970's) have beautiful rainbow toning on the obverses and many are cam/dcam.

I ask CladKings' thoughts (and those of other forum members) on the fairness of the pricing on the mint state coins; on what price would be fair for the proof coins; and on what dates and mint marks on the mint state coins are hard to find (i.e. worth at least a few bucks each).

Thanks, SanctionII.

hard to say without dates and grades...........if its as cheap as the clad ones go for it.

Family, kids, coins, sports (playing not watching), jet skiing, wakeboarding, Big Air....no one ever got hurt in the air....its the sudden stop that hurts. I hate Hurricane Sandy. I hate FEMA and i hate the blasted insurance companies.

$33 sounds very cheap. 82pd,83pd and some others in the 80's and 90's command premium prices.

$33 for $20 worth of BU MS coins sounds like a great deal to me!
    I don't know anything about the proofs.image

    TTT.

So far, opinions lead me to think I will pull the trigger (what the heck, if I do not like the coins I can always spend them and lose only a few bucks).

However, CladKing, where are you? I need your opinion on this big time opportunity that is staring me in the face (LOL).

By the way, there are a couple of MS 1982 and 1983 quarters in the bunch.

Update time. I picked up the clad MS quarters today, 104 in all, ranging from 1967 to 1996. A very nice selection. Total cost, $.33 per quarter. I have gone through the 1967 - 1987 coins and significantly upgraded my 1965-1987 Whitman holder of raw clad quarters. I know am only lacking MS examples of 1965, 1966, 1971-P. 1977-P, 1983-P and 1983-D. The 2 1983 coins are probasbly VF-EF. Many of the coins have very nice toning.

All in all a pleasing upgrade to my raw clad quarter set, I will have to look at 1988 through 1996 later tonite and continue with upgrading.

    You probably did well.

There is very little market on MS-60 moderns, but these sound like they're nicer ones
if you got so many up-grades. Choice coins tend to be bargains when you find them
and even gems will typically be cheap if they're raw.

Further update. I went back to the shop and looked at a number of raw proof clad quarters. I picked up 14 proof quarters [with dates ranging from 1973 - 1992] for $7.00. All of them must have been stored together in the same location [Whitman Album?] They all have the same toning. On the obverse there is dusty rainbow toning with nice colors and eye appeal. On the reverse there is a few with similar rainbow toning and the rest have a nice light blue toning.

The coin guy at the shop also tossed in for free a used Dansco Washington Quarter Album. Over the past few days I looked at all of the mint state clad quarters I pulled out of circulation in the 1960's-70's, compared them with the ones I picked up last week, chose the best of the bunch and put them into the Dansco Album. I then pulled out my Whitman albums with the 1932 - 1964 silver quarters I pulled out of circulation as a kid (most circulated, but some mint state] and put them into the Dancso Album.

The Dansco Album has most of the holes filled. It looks very nice and has a variety of looks to it [circulated silver, circulated toned silver, mint state blast white silver, a couple of higher grade circulated clads, mint state clads including many with beautiful toning in gold and in blue, and clad proofs, including cameo rainbow toned clad proofs and untoned cameo clad proofs.

Now that I am started, I have no doubt that the Dansco Album will be a long term project to fill in empty holes and to upgrade. Heck, I will probably get extra pages and include the silver cameo proofs from 50-64 and maybe even the 36-42 proofs.

    Lots of fun so far.
