Really Low Grade 1928 Peace - FR02

I was just scanning eBay and saw this worth sharing - a FR02 1928 Peace Dollar

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11980&item=3943727710&rd=1

Anybody trying to get that lowest grade regisrty set should be thrilled with this one. It ends in a few hours though. It's fun to see such low grades slabbed. The seller seems humorous about it too.

    Removing "fugly" from subject description...

Pardon my original desciption. I guess fugly would be those "monster" fake toned or really spotted coins.

This one looks good for such a low grade.

I check PCGS and I couldn't find pop listings for coins graded that low. Is there a way to find out how many of them are in FR2?

(Thanks Doug for the kind words.)

RE: Population of FA02 1928 Peace dollars? When asked during an question/answer session at Long Beach, David Hall confirmed this is the only FA02 Peace dollar PCGS has seen/graded.

And when you think about it, that makes sense.
Even back in the 40's and 50's it was known the 1928 was a key date dollar. My first edition Red Book (1947) shows this one at a premium- on the same run as the 1921 (only the 1934-S is a better coin). Most of these were pulled from circulation before getting any where close to a low grade. The next trick is locating not just a low grade but then one that is absolutely problem free and therein lies the rub (no pun intended). I honestly believe you could place a dozen collectors on a goose chase. Either locate a 1928 in GEM condition or another in FA02 and they'de return with GEM coins.

So yer saying I own a POP1 coin? image I'm gonna have to rethink cracking this badboy out and putting it in my Dansco now. Do you happen to know if there are any PO1's? That would be cool if it's a POP1, None Lower haha.

No PO01 coins, and as far as I know a POP ONE coin unless one has been holdered in the last year or so.

I know the Dealer that has yours graded about a decade or so ago. Only two people have owned it, you're now the third. PM me for details if you wish.

PM Sent. I usually have no problem, infact I look forward to, cracking out and freeing coins from their plastic coffins. HOWEVER, I think I should leave this one be and keep it with it's plastic coating.
  • Now I'm inspired to resubmit my ulta- original problem free 1889-CC MORGAN AG-3 to NGC to try for that elusive FR-02 downgrade. NGC is getting SO TIGHT on these downgrades recently!! I'm really jealous of the lucky buyer. image

Pat hit the nail on the head with this one - low grade Peace Dollars aren't common and finding one that isn't damaged (or cleaned) is a very tough task. As Pat mentioned, there have only been 2 owners of this coins - and I was the other one! Pat sold me this coin last year whenI needed a low grade Peace dollar.....I subsequently made a 1922 PO01 and sold the coin back toPat (as I promised Iwould). I'm glad tosee its found a new great home! Here's what the 1922 PO01 looks like:

    Sorry Cladiator.

I feel like the kid that walked into a poker game and gave away the winning hand. image sniff. sniff.
Next time, maybe I should share interesting auctions after they end? What's the group norm protocol on this?

I'm glad you won too! It seems that it also became a good discussion thread. image

I generally wait until after an auction ends before sharing it (On the same hand, even if an auction does interest me and it's posted, I generally won't bid up a fellow board member, unless it's something I *know* I'll win, regardless of price), but you shouldn't feel bad image
