Resubmitting and The Grading Process

A newbie question that hasn't been handled recently (was in early 2004, 2003).

6 early 70's cards of various sports inc Howe, Dryden RC, Schmidt RC, Stabler RC. This is my initial membership.
All received the same grades (5) - I was expecting mix of 6-8.

Dang those cards are better than the others I see getting those grades.

Is there any way to learn why my cards were graded the way they were?

And resubmitting seems to be a controversial process. Is it worth it - considering the diff between a 5 and 6 is roughly double the price?

Comparring is the easiest way to learn. And read the PSA standards for each grade very carefuly. And a 10x loupe helps.

  • I cracked out a card I thought would grade one point higher and re-sent. It was given a grade lower. I called before it was shipped out and asked why. The answer they gave made sense once I got the card back. They were kind enough to put it back to the orignal grade though...cool grader and great customer service!

There always seems to be a reason...and it' usually one we miss. By all means get a 10x loupe for the corners and angle the card in a bright light for the surface. I have been doing this for a few years and have a high % of correct pre-grades.

You really don't want my perspective on resubmitting.

I take that as a "no".

  • look at the cards carefully... even the BIG submitters miss this occasionally... if there is the slightest wrinkle or light crease anywhere it's automatically a 5... if they look like 8s and w/o seeing them, i would suggest that as the first place to start.

jskirwin> It's neither a yes nor a no. More to the point, why is it so many people feel the need to resubmit so many cards? My question is why can't PSA get it right the first time - thereby making it unnecessary to crack and resubmit cards?

I realize that people will have varying expectations of what is worthy of a given grade, but when advanced collectors that I know have a ~85% success rate of cracking 8s and getting 9s - and a startling percentage going from 8s to 10s - it definitely gives me pause.
