2004 Mint Set sales lowest in over 40 yrs....CW 12/6/04

Just rec'd my new Coin World today. As of 11/17, the Uncirculated Mint set sales total was 844,484. This is the lowest since 1963, when 606,612 were sold. No wonder the sets are going bonkers on eBay. Chris

I believe costs have something to do with it. I bet the profit margain is small on this item compared to others they sell. Why push a low margain product when they can sell other big profit items like used Mint bags for $8.95!! I can't believe they are actually selling used bags for $8.95.

Dang, I just sold 10 of them. I still have 15 but was going to cut some of them up for coins. Also consider that they have 1 year type coins, the state quarters, ken halves only avail from the mint, and the Sac only avail from the mint. These sets may be worth a ton in years to come. Maybe I will wait, but 1963 mint sets go for around $11 on ebay.

I went to a local coin shop yesterday and asked price just out of curiosity - I think it was $47! Proof set was lower - in thirties. Needless to say I didn't buy any coins from those people.

The Mint fabricates interest by pulling stunts like this. Reminds me of how Vegas allows a few winners along, just to keep the dream alive.
