Sheldons book is dated and is more of a numismatic literature collectable today. I doubt if anyone seriously into Large Cents uses this book as a reference anymore as there are many newer book versions out with nice photos and a date by date analysis which is easier to read and use. The introduction to Large Cents by Sheldon though is nostalgic writing and reads like poetry. To me just reading that was worth the price I paid for the book. It is a nice keepsake book though and most collectors of Large cents have a copy in their library. You can contact the Early American Copper Society if interested in some of the newer books available.
NO!! The Sheldon book is still worth having but you DON'T want the 1990 edition. Find one of the older ones (My personal preference is for the 1958 or 1965 editions.) The plates in the 1990 edition are HORRIBLE! They are little more than black circles. (The 1976 plates are a little too light but usable, the 1981 edition is a little better than the 76 but seems to be harder to find.)
