Anyone cherry picked overseas?

I have a friend going to Valparaiso, Chile, a major stop over port on the route around the horn, i.e before the Panama cannal. He is not a coin guy but I told him to buy anthing US from before 1880 that he see's. has anyone been to a place like this and cherry picked? Any advice?

  • Would they even have anything US from before 1880 and would he be able to tell if it was real?
  • Good question, however I would think that fakes would not be common, or even likely, however it is a risk.

Speaking from Brazil, there is stuff out here pre-1880. I'm not sure about asking a non-coin guy to look for it though because a lot of the stuff I find has spent considerable time on a buffing wheel!

Look at some of the Yahoo.com.br (or choose your country) coin auctions and you can get a feel for what will be available out here. Dave

You should see all the nice trade dollars they have in Hong Kong!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I made a killing when ebay first went world wide. Every time they added a new country I made some killer deals but about two years ago things pretty much dried up and the risk of getting ripped off or buying a counterfiet outgrew the chances of getting a steal. So many counterfiets now I would not even buy gold overseas unless you know what to look for and are able to absorb losses. Trade dollars and seated dollars are heavily faked so I would stay away from these as well. Probably safe buying circulated non key dates but then why bother for common coins. mike image

  • I would feel comfortable doing it but I should probably tell my buddy to not take the risk unless he can get a coin really cheap, like a buck or two.
  • I've heard there are loads of 1804 Dollars in Afganistan! Everything I've seen in the Philippines (where I'm going in two weeks) seems cleaned...
