Silver 1942 Proof Jeffersons

Are most of them slabbed as MS65 toned to some extent? I was checking some out in an auction and almost all were described as having some gold toning. Are the untoned "white" pieces harder to find and worth a premium over the toned pieces?

  • The "white" pieces have been dipped more often than not. Since many folks don't like toning they won't buy the toned coins. So people dip the nickels and no more toning. So they aren't worth more to me, though some people might pay a few bucks more for them.

Usually I like the untoned coins. However, I have come to appreciate the prewar nickels with good toning. Looks more authentic.

  • I'm on the lookout for a nicely toned '42 War nickel proof in PR67. Most
I've seen seem to be hazy or have been dipped white.

There are some nice toned proof Wars out there ... My 67, from BNE/Barry, has a beautiful mellow gold tone and I have a gorgeous PR-66 from Carl with some nice purple splashes and hints of gold ...

i'm in the boat with Ken and would dump a bucket of water on Randy and Carl!!!!!!!!!! image been lookin' for an attractively toned 1942-P for awhile and have had to settle for my brilliant NGC PR66 with faint cameo.

most of the coins are either brilliant or toned with what i view as an unattractive haze that doesn't generally impart any color, just cloudiness to the mirrors. my search continues with grade not really the deciding factor.

oh yeah, just kidding about the water as we bail, guys.image

  • Hi,
I will avoid any untoned Proof Jeffersons. I have bought a few 42-T2 this year but none met my expectations and were returned. I am looking for a 5c to match the 2 I have already - 1939 PR66 and 1941 PR65 - both toned - the '41 heavily so. Many/most dislike that defree of toning but I appreciate it. As long as the "haze" does not onbstruct the mirrors to a disturbing degree I prefer such coins. The 2 I have can be seen in my "little 5c set" below.

    Best,
    Billy
