If it were offered on eBay as a raw coin with no grade mentioned, most bidders would assume it is a very nice AU, and the winning bidder might assume MS-63. At least that's my take for why this coin is in a holder.
I can't tell by the picture what is so wrong with the coin to justify sending it to NTC.

  • The image in the auction does look nice and the strike is excellent. image

Now that I'm home next to my Breen encylopedia, I read that only one 1893 Columbian Half was minted in proof, and this is in the Chicago Historical Society collection, although another was sold as proof in 1982 for $1900. There were 103 proof 1892 Columbian halves minted.

Does NTC know something Breen didn't? If you have to choose between believing NTC and an eBay Powerseller vs. Walter Breen, it may be safer to bid on this assuming it is a business strike at other grading services.

It probably isn't a proof. Hard to tell on Columbians sometimes as there are many prooflikes-------------------BigE

According to the 2005 Redbook (page 245) there were "approximately 100 brilliant proofs struck for each date" (1892 & 1893)

  • I would trust Breen on this one too. Bid on it as if it were a mint state 63, that's all. You can't expect it to be attributed right if NTC did it.
