Wells Fargo So-Called dollar

jmcu12jmcu12 Posts: 2,452 ✭✭✭
I just purchased a Wells Fargo so-Called dollar off of ebay and I am trying to find out more about it.

I know that it celebrated their 50th anniversary, it is made of silver, and it was given to all employees of Wells Fargo at the time.

What I would like to find out is how many were made and what history was behind it. I know that some of these so-called dollars might have been made at the Mint - is this one of them?

Thanks for all your help!

And does anyone here know where to get a copy of the So-Called Dollars book? Or is there a website on this?

I like it, but have no idea as to what value should be placed on these.

This may be legitimate, but beware of fake and reproduction "Wells Fargo" items.

Pre Turb, I suppose ANACS or NGC can authenticate, but is there any other way to determine if this medal is real? It would really suck if I got taken on this.....

It's most likely genuine, I don't think there has been too much counterfeiting done of So-Called Dollars. Maybe a few of the most popular and valuable pieces. Whether or not it is worth what you paid is another matter. I don't know enough to say for sure. You would need to talk to some of the token specialist dealers. I do think there has been a club formed recently for collectors of So-Called Dollars. If anyone knows a contact point for them, they could probably help you.

If you're concerned at all, just send it to ANACS to authenticate/attribute; that's what they're there for!

    Hi jmcu12,

It looks like the real deal, the folks that you bought it from have been selling quite a few so-calleds over the past couple of months. It is attributed in the Hibler and Kappen book as HK#296 made of silver and is a fairly rare piece to aquire. HK didn't list who manufactured the medal, but they were issued to each employee of the company. A nice piece of history.

    regards,

I just received the medal last night and it looks great! The edge dings are not that bad, but they are noticeable.

Will NGC still certify this with the dings, or do I need to send to ANACS (as I would a damaged coin)?

I would send it to ANACS just to be safe.
