Dumb question, or what?

I have two 1922 peace dollars. One's planchet is 20% larger than the other. Is this a circulated proof or just a circulated peace?

    Do they weigh the same?

Back in my college days, we use to shrink coins in the lab. Perhaps this was what happened?

My son has a scale, a Salton meant for food, I believe, but probably used for other purposes. I check the weight and they showed equal. It is not believable, because the two coins do have a obvious weight difference, that one can tell just by putting each in one's palms, a visual diference as well. 20% is just a guess, but probably close to accurate.
ps. the smaller one isn't shrunk, but the larger one is obtuse... thanks for the thought.

    Edit: Nevermind.

Perhaps the larger one is a fake?

He's saying that his son uses it to measure the weight of illegal drugs.

I guess, he's cool to a point but, do you have an answer to my question?
  • Define 20% larger.
    Larger diameter? Thicker?
Look at the rays on the reverse to see if it's the high relief 1922.

  • Is the reeding on the larger coin rounded over? I'm thinking of the practice of battering a coin
rim with a spoon to flatten/widen it out.

Could it have been struck out of collar? [No reeding on the edges]

Why hasn't anybody said the obvious in that proofs weren't 20% larger than circulation strikes?? I think we need to see a picture.....

  • One has been "Texas sized" by placing it between two pieces of leather and beating it with a hammer?

(The weight difference you note holding them in your palms when there is no difference on a scale could just be psycological. Your eyes see one as larger and tells your brain that and it therefor "feels" the larger one as being heavier.)
