Wife said I could just this once......Morgan grades please!!!

So I went online and picked out 10 morgans for her to bid on and these are 3 of them that she won..........I think she may have a decent grasp of them as all 3 of these were bought RAW off ebay for very little....they aren't the worlds best but the '78P has got one hell of a luster going for it. Post yer grades on these please....

BTW....carry1952 .... You beat me out the door this am...... is your '78O for sale?

1878 - Can't believe how good this actually looks in hand!

  • the 1878 S was an auction listed as 1878 (wasn't even listed as an "s" but it was!!!)

    The 1878 P is a 7tf reverse 1879 MS 63 - Looks really good inhand - 1878 rev 1879

The 1903 P looks really good in hand, not much luster but works for me! 1903 for me

All 3 coins look clearly AU to me. The 1878 looks 55/58; the 1878-S looks about AU50; and the 1903 looks like about AU53
    When in doubt, don't.
  • I think the 1878-S and 1903 are AU and I would say the 1878 7TF looks MS62 or MS63 from the picture on the auction.

78 looks like it could go anywhere from AU55 to MS60.
    78-s looks about xf-45
03 just looks wrong........cleaned, whizzed maybe? Hard to tell from the blurry pics.
Could I make a suggestion? Buy some common, cheap PCGS slabbed Morgans in a few different grades so you will have something to compare your raw purchases to. Better yet, buy them alreday entombed untill you get a better feel for grading. You won't pay that much more of a premium, and you won't get stuck with coins your local dealer is gonna offer you $7 a piece for!

The 78-S and the 1903 sure look AU55ish and the 78 looks MS63. It looks like you did good baised on the closing prices.

  • I checked the 1878 rev against a couple of my MS64 Morgans and this has a few more marks, but a LOT more luster than the others. The 1878 S looks better than the AU55 that I have but not as good as a 62.

I figure for the price paid for all, I broke even on the 1903 and 1878 S but will send the 1878 rev later to be slabbed.

That's why it's so tough to grade from a blurry picture!image
  • I will be able to take some better pics tonight when I get home from work.

  • That 1878-S looks to have an unengraved wing, man, how did I miss that one! And you got it for a great price, good find!

I would say the 1878 looks AU (maybe 55 or 58), while the 2 others aren't doing as well. They both look very cleaned to me and look around AU50ish.....

If you'll note on the 1878 7TF B2 reverse coins, the eagles right (viewer's left) wing is frequently over polished where it joins the body, near the bottom. With the 1878-S, they re-engraved that particular area by hand resulting in numerous varieties. There were, however, some dies that didn't get the engraved wing and those are some of the earlier strikes for 1878-S.

With the blurriness of the photo, I never would have spotted that.....

    I grade them Au-58, 50-53, and last a 55
