Beckett's new grading special...what a crock!

5.00 per card....
Modern Era Cards Only....ok, I can deal with that for the most part...
No Autograph Cards....can deal with that too as the auto is graded also...
NO ROOKIE CARDS...WHAT???!!! Are you kidding me? And to boot, on the advertisement, they show a 1987 Send-away Bonds..how are they determining the rookie card? Is the 1987 Topps able to be graded? And I think it sucks that you cant get a 1982 Ripken or even a 1990 Sosa graded!
Eeek...damn that Beckett

What are you b*tching about? This is your big chance to get your 2002 Lou Merlonis and 2003 Donnie Sadler cards slabbed at $5 each!

Beckett still grades cards? image Seriously, as long as they don't put any provisions in there about grading trimmed and altered cards - you're all set.

You might not be able to tell on a PSA forum, but Beckett does grade a lot of cards. For modern cards, many collectors believe Beckett is the only game in town.

Oh, since you put it that way, I'll be sure to send in my 2003 Topps Hideo Nomo cards. Still yet, those bums wont let me get my 1992 Brian Taylor rookies. Thats ok...cuz I know the return I'll get on the Nomo's!
My apologies to Beckett...thank you Beckett! You're the best!

I wouldn't send a card to Beckett if it were $1.00 per card.

koby - how many people are sending in modern cards that ARE NOT rookies to Beckett to be graded?

    Nick,

I don't know. I imagine that while the BGS service is floursihing, the BVG service is hardly ever used. Personally, I am happy with PSA for both modern and vintage and I have never submitted cards to Beckett.

It is just my observation at local shows and in talking to people trading modern cards. Those who participate on these forums love PSA, but some people prefer Beckett.

koby - I agree with your last post. I just don't see modern cards that aren't rookies (with occasional exceptions for autographed or game-used cards) in any company's holders at card shows.

It sounds like something they're trying to do to kick-start their registry. They know that at $5 per card they'd get inundated with thousands of Bowman Chrome rookies and not a lot else. But it's not the case that they are excluding all rookie year cards. In the weekly newsletter they send out, it says,"People are asking if they can send in rookie year cards for the special. The answer is, yes," says Pepper Hastings of BGS. "RCs and XRCs as designated in the Beckett Price Guides are excluded from the deal, but rookie year cards that are not designated RCs are welcome." Still, that's kind of petty. It's a good time to get those refractors and other parallels and inserts graded.
