MORGAN DOLLAR PRICES GOING DOWN IN GRAYSHEET!!

I have noticed some Morgan prices going down in Graysheet. Some were understandable- common coins- hi populations. But some ms65 & ms66's with low populations went down to a point where they are below prices of coins with higher pops. What am I missing? Also is this a weakening in the Morgan Market? It would seem that if it were just a correction, population should be a factor, so low pop coins shouldn't go below others in price.

Opinions?

  • I have been watching pcgs ms67 common dates in heritage auctions and many of these do not reach the reserve price. Dealers tell me that these are strong coins and there is much demand-- but I don't see it in the auction results.

    Is the market over-hyped?

Gold and silver bullion have made strong moves up lately, but are the gold investors diverting their money from numismatic and bullion to the GLD issue on the NYSE ??

If the market is going to crash, no doubt the Morgan $1 will be the first to head south. Of course the Moderns will preceed this crash imho.
  • cheers, alan mendelson! I also noticed in some auctions that $300-500 morgans are likewise not meeting reserve. The reserve price is more than graysheet ask but less than universe retail. The only time it's met or exceeded seems to be for CC Morgans.

  • I don't think the morgan market is crashing. I just don't understand why some lower pop morgans are going down. Unless, it is just the fickleness of collectors.
  • I find that some of the higher grade ms65 or ms66 dollars, that are normally quite available to find in 64 condition or lower grades to be overpriced. There just isn't demand for some of the coins, thus the decrease in price. Investors would be better off owning a 94-P, 93-CC, 96-S in a higher grade, etc. than a 79-P, 80-P, 81-P in 65 when they can be purchased for much less in the 4 grade. JMO

I think its a well needed adjustment, as some of the more common pieces are tough sells at the current levels, and thier are plenty to go around. I too, Have watched several barely meet bid in the past couple of auctions that was including the Buyer premium.

I think a few more adjustments are comming for several more in this grade range/availability??

Mint sets and proof sets have also come down, yet I can't pick off decent ones without paying stupid money. image
