I am in for a rough road with my infant 78 set

The amount of low pop commons in PSA 9 and 10 are just staggering. I can see now that I will have no choice but to find un-opened items
down this long road with alot of my own submissions if I will have any chance at creating what I envision over the next 2 years. Nothing but PSA 9's across the board with a dash of 10's ...

It may be a very expensive proposition going the unopened route. Many PSA 10s can be had on Ebay in the $20 - $50 range. I would HIGHLY suggest starting on Ebay and start contacting some big dealers (DSL, 4SharpCorners, etc.) before going the unopened route. An unopened wax box might cost you $250 - $400, and you might not get but more than a dozen or so cards worth submiting (sometimes more, sometimes less). Then, add in PSA grading fees, shipping and handling, etc. In many cases - it is "cheapest" to buy them in bulk lots already graded. Every few months you might see large lots of PSA 9s on Ebay or through other outlets that are actually priced out less than grading fees. And if you submit yourself, there is a 0% chance you will only get 9s and 10s.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I have a fair amount of 78's available, including some lower pop stuff. I would be willing to listen to any interest you have. Just email me and clue me in.

I certainly have no intentions of buying box after box of unopened. I just know that I will at least buy a box sooner or later to help me
along. Not to mention the fun involved in that. I have already picked up a small lot of 15 9's and a couple singles from various people. I'm
still fighting with what route to take. Do I search out alot of low pops before getting the more available cards and what not. I made a list of the low pops and it is LOOOOONGimage

downgoesfrazier - I will drop you a note, thanks. I am opening lines of communication with several kind people from this board and making
it known that I will be contacting all of them now and down the road as I see this through.

also, I'm not to thrilled about buying raw from e-bay, the stuff I have seen does not make me confident that 9's will be more than just possible. I really don't want to down grade my vision of a set with 9's across the board and a 10 or two image

just take your time with the set and you'll save ALOT of money. 726 cards leaves you with at least a few hundred or more cards that can be picked up at a bargain. early on, try buying cards in groups because the shipping costs of buying a card here and a card there will add up. you have to pick your spots when it comes to bidding aggressively. with 78's i would only make aggressive bids for "tough " 10's.when you get past 95% it becomes a different game.good luck and enjoy !!!

FWIW, i recently picked up a phil garner in psa 10 from 4 sharp for 20 bucks!!

You just missed it. I sold 100 different PSA 9 minors and commons on Ebay for only $260. Thats only $2.60 per PSA 9 card. I dont think you'll have any problems buying cards cheap in 9 and 10.

    gaspipe,
I'm not sure my man is serious yet. He's just "kickin' tires". He'll choose a direction and either put up or shut up at some point with the set. It's scary lookin' at over 700 cards! I saw your lot and was tempted to whack it myself. Pretty good break potential and the cards appeared pretty good. Anybody who is serious about getting into the set would have ponied up on that one. I was watching that auction to get a feel for that market as I have hundreds available as well. The thing is, if someone just wants to cherry-pick low-pops the price I charge goes up considerably! You 100-card lot was indeed a great opportunity.

I love all this talk about '78s. In my humble opinion, the 78 set is the greatest set Topps ever made. Of course, this view is based on a 7 year old child (me) being first introduced to baseball cards. It seems a lot of us on this board find our favorite set to be the first set we collected as a kid.

I would love myself to put together an all PSA graded set but my budgeting dollar can only go so far (currently working on a 7 or better '71 Topps set and an 8 or better '78 Donruss KISS set). I am, however, always trying to upgrade my raw '78 set when possible.

My advice would be buy some unopened product along the way. Why not have fun with it? I have cracked a couple of '78 vending boxes in the last couple of years and never had any more fun in my life. While just my opinion on collecting, I go for fun first, profit second. I have too much stress in my life as it is to worry about the profit of my collection.

Good luck and I would like to see your progress.
