This gives you a chance to "tune up" your eyes so to speak. My first submission was about the same experience as yours, you have to handle a bunch of raw cards then see what grades they get before you can acquire a feel for the standards PSA is looking for. Good luck on your next sub.

I think when we first submit, we just look at the cards at a quick
glance and say "these look nice" and that's it and off they go and
we just hope.

I feel pretty confident with judging new cards/refractor stock based cards, but wouldn't feel too comfortable with anything non-refractor based.
