Cash coin experts - help! (vol.2)

I had a fellow email me with these photos of a cash coin trying to find out what it may be.
I guessed it might be from the reign of Huang Sung T'ung Pao (1038-1040 AD).
Can anyone confirm or deny? Thanks!

  • I'm going for 1700s Japan.

    Canadian is right. It's Japanese.
  • Neat coin. At first glance it's a typical Kanei-Tsuho coin, but the rims are much larger, and the egraving on the rims in back. Jacobs and Vermuelle's Japanese Coinage lists it as late fuedal coin, K801 Hoei Tsuho (1708), with the 4 engravings on the rim in back, and no mintmark.

  • Thanks guys! I'll pass the info along and give him a link to this thread.
Duh! I didn't even think to check Japan in Krause and there's a similar 10 mon (1707-09) pictured there.
I'm out of my area here obviously but I'm hopefully retaining a bit of knowledge along the way.
    Any idea of value?

  • A price list in the back of my book lists this coin in average condition (vf-xf) at $1.50. However, the price list is from 1972. Frank Robinson is advertising another Japanese coin that is priced on this list for $1.50; at today's price of $3.50 in avf. So my shot at pricing is $2-4. Keep in mind though his pricing low compared to Krause. I can't tell you what Krause has - I haven't got the older books.

The quality of this specimen is rather poor. I have seen nice ones go for as much as 15 dollars but I don't think this one is worth anything near that.
  • Thanks for the great info guys!
