  • I had qite a few in PCGS holders from my Registry set I sold that were not as clean and were in MS-66 holders! A lot depends on those tiny line that aren't clear in photo as well as LUSTER, LUSTER, LUSTER!

I was wondering if someone would notice those little lines. HINT: They aren't hairlines. They are die striations, minted that way. The coin isn't very lusterous in the picture, but is in person.

Here is a PCGS 65 for comparison.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Just to be different I'll go with NGC Ms67 but most likely a 66.

    NGC MS66
    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

    Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.
  • JRocco- You were robbed by PCGS!!! Nice coin and boy that "O', "D" and "W" in the motto look funny to me. Is it a F.S. variety or just the photo?

  • AKRick wins with his first guess! It's an NGC MS67.

I agree morgannut2. PCGS has been killing me lately. You should see the last CC Morgan they BB'd on me for altered surfaces. That is just light reflection form the top light on the motto. I see a solid 66 on mine, even on a bad day....well maybe I sent mine in on a REALLY BAD DAY.
Nice coin Android. A 40D in 67 is a nice score.

Now you've got me wanting to submit my my early Washies to PCGS that I have in my Whitman book. Either that, or I'm very, very GREEN behind the ears when it comes to grading Washies...I'll choose option #2.image By the way, that's a nice 40-D Android. I have a crack out 63 in my Whitman book.

  • Thanks everyone! I found the 40D in a Dansco album at a 20 table local coin show I've been going to for years. I paid $60 for it. Others I bought from the same set are a 39S, 42S, and a 36S, which I haven't sent in yet. My opinion would be MS66 for the 39S and 36S and the 42S is a lock MS67. We'll see what happens....

Heck, finding an original 1940-D BU quarter roll is tougher than many of the dates in the 1930's!!
I have not found an original roll of 1940-D quarters in 35 years of looking. The toughest date between 1937 through the present in my opinion.

That gives you an idea of how tough even single pieces are of this date.

    Good solid find there! Congrats!
