DCAM Accented Hair JFK?

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
I just snagged this from a local dealer a few minutes ago for $9. It sure looks like an AH to me. And dcam to boot! It won't grade higher than 64 due to some noticeable hairlines. But if it is AH, still worth submitting. So what do you all think? Sorry about the pics. I rushed them and didn't feel like using my usual setup.

Also, would a dip in like 30% ez-est harm this coin?

It is indeed an Accented Hair. Can't really tell from the image if it's DCAM, but it's certainly at least cameo. NICE SCORE!

    Neil,

It's a nice AH. I can't tell about the cam/dcam designation from the pics, but I'm sure you can in hand. The stuff on the left obverse field won't dip off, IMO. It's pretty common on AH's to find them milk spotted. It's certainly a profit coin for you. Even in low grade, dcam AH's are pretty valuable. Good luck. image BTW - The dip won't hurt it.

Thanks! I had that feeling with it. The fields are very watery and there is good contrast. I think it's good contrast for dcam.

What's with that spot in his hair. Looks like carbon spotting to me. Won't that hurt the grade more? Don't want to bash it just trying to learn.

The dip wouldn't be for the milk spotting as much as for the spot on the top of his head.

    LindeDad,

Most of the junk you see on the coin will come off, except for the "milk spots" in the field. They're likely etched into the surface. When that coin was minted, the mint actually washed the planchets with Ivory soap powder (Tomaska, interview with mint employee). Occasionally on the earliest batches of Kennedys (the AH's), the rinse was less than perfect, and you'd get a little soap struck into the surface. They improved the rinse greatly by the time the second dies were employed. Many AH's just come spotty.

And Don was right. I did a super quick dip and no visible change. Now I'm just going to wait and get a few more coins and then submit away. I'm a happy camper for $9 now. image

Yummy, very nice pickup for $9.00.

Please, however, stop right now and do not ever, ever, cherry pick again [that way the pool of available cherries for me to pick will not shrink LOL].

Looks like an AH to me but tough to tell if it is a dcam. Obverse looks like it might be there - reverse tough to tell from the pic. Anyway, if you are thinking of dipping the coin - I wouldn't. I would send it to NCS for conservation. If the coin has a decent shot at Dcam, why not leave the conservation to the professionals? Evaluation and conservation costs 3% of the coins declared value with a $15 minimum. You can also have NCS return the coin to you ungraded if you don't want it in an NGC holder.

It's interesting. I had seen your all's comments on milk spots before but until I actually saw it for myself, I didn't have a good idea of how they looked on the surface. Still, I think Russ's has the gold star!
