Proof set question for Marty or Russ

Hi Guys,
How can you tell if that "unopened" proof set on eBay or at the show is truly unopened ?
I just received 1962 proof set in the mail and the yellow envelope is in pristine condition, no creases, tears, fading.
Seems kind of odd to me.

  • Since MM or Russ seem to be indisposed at the moment,I've purchased a couple of "unopened proof sets".

Some of the ones that have been resealed are easy to spot. They'll have glue spots under flap where there should just be the normal lick and stick glue that is on regular envelopes. Some, however are really hard to tell.IMO.

Check the color of the envelope. If it's bright and fresh, it's likely a repack in an aftermarket reprint or an original purchased from the GSA when they unloaded a bunch of supplies. Also check the sealing on the flap. If it's been wetted and sealed all the way out to the edges, it's likely a repack. The mint sealing system generally only caught the middle third of the flap.

The fact is that 90% of the "mint sealed" stuff on the market has been picked over and repacked. The only real way to know for sure is to buy unopened shipping packs or boxes.

Thanks for the responses. Based on the info provided, the one I received appears to be repacked.
Can I still have success cracking a repacks or should I just re-sell it ?

It depends on what you're looking for. I sometimes find Accented Hairs in obvious repacks because most people are just looking for cameo coins. So, if you're hunting varieties, you could get lucky.
