A diamond in the rough

I just bought a small collection which included a handful of ugly looking wheat pennies. As you can see they are dirty and ugly. I paid a whopping 3c each for them and I was going to throw them in the bucket with the rest of the common wheats.

When I went to throw them in I noticed that they looked like they were higher grade. Oh what the hell, I'll try and see if they clean up. Well using a little Blue Ribbon (the old stuff with the Trichlorlethane which is bad for you) I coated a Q tip and lightly coated the coin then wiped it with the dry end and wow. The darn things were BU just coated in crap. I never thought it would come off either. Now I got nearly a full roll of these 1929 D Lincolns in BU (mostly RB).

This pic is of the exact same two coins above after being cleaned up:

I know, now you're going to give me a hard time for ripping off an old lady, but if I had known I certainly would have paid a lot more for these ugly coins.

And life goes on and on and on. Too bad people don't look at there money. Some collect some just spend.

  • Is it ok to clean the coins? Does it change their value for better or worse?
Earth is the insane asylum for the universe.
  • I'll give you 4 cents apiece. That way you make a 33% profit and can soothe your guilty conscience by not having them around to remind you that you ripped off that little old lady.

  • It is ok to clean anything as long as you own it. You can do what you want with them. Having said that, collectors pay more money for non cleaned coins. Cleaning coins can sometimes inprove the value like these cents, but other times ruin a coin their value. It is best to know what you are doing remainingincognito.

    I agree with you Cameron.
  • Oh geeez Cam. Yes there are way to sometimes improve problem coins such as these Lincolns. That is why NCS exists. If done correctly it can possibly improve value. If done incorrectly it can hurt the value.
The nice thing about the conservation of these, it vastly improved the coin and most will still slab as either AU58 or MS grades.
  • I know that. I was answering undercovercognitio's question.

  • Bzzzzzzzzzzzzz, time has run out. I was waiting for 6c each but nobody felt they were worth it so they are OFF THE TABLE. Sorry guys, I guess I'll just flip them up and put them in the box with a crazy stupid price on them.

Acetone turns Copper weird colors... according to coppercoins, the only thing he's found to be safe for the color of copper coins, is Goo-Gone...
