I am starting a 1978 PSA set

My collecting interest in the past has been mainly directed towards un-opened baseball items. Since I have joined
PSA I have quickly grown fond of these graded cards. Problem is I am all over the place with what I have. I have settled
in the empty head of mine that a PSA graded 8 or better 1978 Topps set will be financially feasible and I do love the overall appeal of this set. Anyone with PSA graded
commons from this set please IM at AOL Instant Messenger screen name softparade1313 or send me e-mail at dpy99@comcast.net

Thanks!

Do you want to buy raw and submit or pick them up already graded? I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a trip over to the Registry forum...you'll find some other late 70's collectors who can give you some help. As it goes for raw to graded...here is one I submitted and was very disappointed...thought for sure it would get a 9...slight black print dots but the corners are really great and the card doesn't have the red "smudge" near the word "rookie" shortstops which is so prevalent in many copies.

    image

Good luck! If you need any commons to submit LMK - have about 450 - but as you know this is a tough set with respect to centering.

stone 193, I am going to pick up some graded commons just to get me started. I plan on submitting raw cards as well. I find
alot of enjoyment in picking out cards that may grade well. I have several sealed packs that I may open as well. Not to mention I am in the market to buy some more.

By the way, thanks for the advise, I have posted this same thread in the Registry forum.

I have read alot about the "smudge" Trammel/Molitor. That stinks that you couldn't pull a 9 with the no-smudge card.
Centering looks great as well as the corners!

Mike - mighty nice Molitor/Trammell rookie there. Centering is a problem with the '78s as well.
After you see enough '78s, a dead on centered card looks kind of shocking!image

    I totally agree!

edit to add: thanx Mark - will probably someday crack this hummer and resub - think I got the grader from hell on this one - the corners are very nice and worthy of a 9 IMO.

Mike - that card drives me nuts! I have submitted a few nice (no smudge) sharp corner copies, but they all have come back 8's. I swore also that they were 9 material, but always, I got 8's. I had to buy my 9 for my set already slabbed...your copy looks nice in the scan, but is it a bit o/c to the left, and up? If not, I can't imagine why (if the corners are sharp) that wouldn't get you a 9.

Looks to me like the centering on stone's card falls within the PSA guidelines for centering. Unless the back side is horrible ...

It's 2mm/4mm - T/B - or about 33/67 which would probably account for the 8 - didn't measure it since the eye appeal was pretty good IMO.

  • LOL - sorry 'bout the blank post - don't know what happened there!

'78 was my first set to collect - I had some cards "given" to me by some friends back in the late 70's after school. I have been hooked ever since then in this hobby.

I like the set - other call it ugly, but it has some good memories for me!

I've "heard" that the rookie card in question gets totally hammered every time it's graded - not too sure why - but yeah - lots of "miscuts"!

Good luck on those PSA 8's - I saw a bunch close out last week on ebay at PSA 8 at $0.99 each, with no bids (all commons).

Post a scan if you ever pull a 9 or better on the tough rookies from the set!

I am doing some searching of my 78T Box and found a few star cards in there that kind of surprised me.
I scanned the Rose card since I think it looks pretty good - what do you guys think?
