Coppercoins and the 1895 Morgan photo - I wish the whole thing never happened...

I can say that this whole experience has been one that I sure wish had never happened. If I could go back in time and forget to post the original topic that started this whole mess I would. This isn't what I intended, obviously, and this isn't what I want as my experience here. I don't like reading arguements and I sure don't like being a part of them.

My intent on being here is all in education, to be a part of a friendly group, and a love of the hobby. Some of the trolls who have been egging me on for a fight are draining all the good energy out of the whole experience, and I'm frankly tired of the whole thing. My future participation here is NOT hampered by the trolls, it's simply hampered by my lack of energy for trying to do anything I think is helpful out of fear that someone will pick all the bad out of what I try to do in good nature. I have posted a number of times to try being a part of the group with a subject I'm not necessarily the leading expert on just to be dragged around by someone wanting to "expose" me. I have received nasty PMs from some people for what reason I couldn't possibly explain. Of course to counter that I have received far more friendly supportive PMs, so the good guys win.

The point is, I don't know about the coin. I don't care about the coin. It was a photographic subject, end of story. I am finished with the job and the coin is behind me. I never even had the thing at my house, I went on location to take the photos. I saw the coin for all of two minutes at the most. It came out of a safe, under my lights, back in the safe, that fast. The ONLY reason I posted it here is because I knew there were a number of Morgan collectors who frequent this place that might like to see a photo of a rare coin, so I posted it. I wasn't looking for reviews, I wasn't looking for back patting, I wasn't looking to sell it, I wasn't checking to see if anyone would notice my fake coin, because IT ISN'T MINE. I posted it solely for the benefit of others because I know a lot of people come here to enjoy seeing photos of coins.

Can we just forget the whole subject came up and move on with life? I promise I'll never post another photo of a coin I don't know about, and I'll post educational threads whenever I have something worthwhile to share. I won't do anything to egg on fights, because that was clearly not my intent this time. I don't want to be the hot subject of the board, I just posted a damn photo! So please just let this crap rest! PLEASE???

I doubt the likelihood of achieving that admonition was enhanced by the posting of this thread.

C.D.: Thanks for the posting this thread and for stimulating a very interesting and engaging discussion in the other thread.

I for one, appreciate that you posted a photo of a Morgan Dollar that we do not usually get the chance to see. I understand how sometimes one may regret making a post because of the amount of energy that you may have to expend as things may drag on, for what you may feel is a very prolonged periods of time.

Those of us who learn from our previous experiences are usually better off than we were before them. I truly hope that you have somehow benefitted from this experience, and I salute you for being a contributing member of this forum!!

I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving today and that you all enjoy the rest of the Holiday weekend!!

  • Thanks for the post C.D. It's a shame that the most interesting Morgan posted here in the last month happened by chance to be not your own coin. It is a VERY, VERY interesting example and it's too bad the situation took a bad turn with you in the middle.

image I read the thread but didn't respond because wasn't my business and I'm not knowledgable on the subject. We've both been in the Military and nothing said or done on this board compares to what we've seen and probably done during those day's. Continue doing what you've been doing. Your photo's are great and that's why we're all here really for the great coin topics and pictures to boot. Take Care, Lee

It was a very educational thread. I know next to nothing about Morgans but I know a little more than nothing now. Great post image

What's to regret? It wasn't your coin, but even if it was it certainly was an interesting bit of research. I, for one, not being a Morgan collector, didn't know that 4 die pairs were used for the 1895. I didn't know what the diagnostics were to look for to differentiate a circulation strike with its mintmark removed from the Philly proof. I didn't know that there was the possibility of high quality struck counterfeits in the Morgan series being around. But I do now, so I learned some new things.

You sneeze in this place and half the forum says Gesundheit and the other half jumps down your throat for not covering your nose. It's the strength and weakness of the forum all at the same time.

You take the good with the bad and the bad with the good and roll with it..... no biggie.

You got it C.D. Hope you and the family had a Happy Thanksgiving, and I, for one, always look forward to you posts---keep em coming.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Who the hell cares, don't let that crap get to you. There will always be those that wanna stir up crap just for the sake of stirring it up. It wasn't yours and you weren't trying to sell it. It's done and over, everybody just get over it!
  • Hey, C. D.,

I not only enjoyed your posting. But would like to commend you for the way you have handled the obstinate folks that have seemingly launched a needless attacks. I have a great loss of respect for some of the folks on this forum. They know who they are. I recently posted a thread with regard to JFK and received some really good responses. However, There is one person who tried to lay the whole memory lane thing to shame. I certainly would of loved to rip his tail from stem to stern. and i could of launched a full scale bashing for this person. I have learned alot here. And "Bashing" is not what the board is about!!!! It's about sharing, learning, and getting some really good experience from the benefit of other knowledgeble folks, Such as yourself. You have not only been helpful, But quick to respond.......... I want you to know, your appreciated here, by many besides myself.

Some remarks that members post here need to be "overlooked" and need not be diginified by a response.

BTW, Good luck at the Smithsonian and should you prefer not to post your pics here. Please post them on your website. Where the folks here that do appreciate your work, will be able to go and share the experience.

    Hang in there, C. D.,

    Respectfully Submitted,

Don't be sorry you posted the pictures of the 95. You did nothing wrong at all- you showed some super nice pictures and it turned out to be very educational for many people. If you can take more pictures that bring on this much and this good of discussion I would be very happy. mike image
  • Man I wish I could be the hot topic........my threads last about 1 minute on the main page image

I also found the thread to be very educational and enjoyable...... I just hope you didn't receive too many unpleasant pm's about it. Regardless of the coin's true nature, it was obvious to me that you had no ill intentions about it...

  • Good message Chuck!

You never know how a post will go on this forum! I remember a post one day not so long ago about some lousy coin dealers. I therefore made a post about four great dealers in my area of the country. My post got 4 responces while the other post went over fifty. There are some people here that love to make perpetual trouble and seldom serve any useful purpose.

I may have even offended some on the one post on the 95 Morgan! Was not my intention! I was just calling as my eyes and senses saw it! For that, I owe nobody anything!

Keep up the good work Chuck, and everyone else for that matter, and we'll all be able to enjoy our time here!

This is for the most part an anonymous message board. A lot of times posts are written and/or interpreted as not being as civil as one would speak face to face. Nature of the beast (thicken that skin a little image )

As far as your thread, I truly hope that it does not change how you post to these boards. As already stated many times and especially by tradedollarnut, this was one of the best threads on these boards. A lot of people learned a lot of new information, IMO one of the main reasons to read this message board.

You have absolutely nothing to apologize for nor any reason to go back in time and undo that thread.

Now if dorkkarl offended you, well, he offends everyone, just ignore it. image

I enjoyed the learning part of the thread, there was some great information and some great pictures in it. The chances are very high that I will never be able to own one of those coins, so I appreciate the fact that I got to see some nice examples. I thank you for showing us that coin, I for one, feel it was a very positive learning experience. Please keep showing us the great pictures image

I don't reply to a lot of threads, but I thought I might this one.
I enjoyed the other thread and the photos and think I've learned
    alot from them. Keep posting.
Sometimes you need to get a bit thick skinned.
I would love one of my post to get this much attention.
    Just my two cents,

    Smitty
