The printing defect on the back, 1/3 of the "three" in the card number missing. Anyone know how widespread this was in this card?
All 13 cards of mine have this defect and I won't have them graded because of it. A waste I suppose. Will this make this card much more desirable than it is now? Given the billions upon billions that were probably printed ....

the shaved 3 ? I understand the eye appeal factor, BUT should this card really be a 10 with the variation?
boggs301012 - do you mean that you have a "FULL 3" card ??

Minor defects on 80's cards exist, and some are not even awknowledged in the Beckett, nor do they make a price difference. The 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly rookie card has the word "training" mispelled in the back. They are all like that and it has bever been corrected.
I don't own a topps Barry Bonds rookie card, so I was unaware of this. It sounds like this is an inherent feature of this particular card, so go ahead and send it to PSA if all else is sharp.
There is a 1988 Topps Mark McGwire Record Breaker card out in which one version has a white speck near his foot. Its hardly noticeable and really no big deal in terms of eye appeal, yet this error is documented and sold as a premium. Some errors are deemed rare, while others are just irrelevent--its all just arbitrary.
One thing is weird though. One of the most significant cards of the 80's, the Mattingly rookie from donruss, has an embarrassing spelling error without being corrected. I mean he was a highly touted rookie when he came up, so one would think companies would take special care and attention of how they design that card. I mean, the Griffey rookie of Upper Deck was numbered 1 purposely because he was a highly touted rookie. Special attention was given in designing his card.

Yes the 88 topps ahs a Boggs variration aswell , on the AS version he has a white smudge On his facial hair.

and special attention was also given in making sure that plenty extras were made for the honchos at ud too......

James, do you have the right fingers on your hands?
"All evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing."
The Mac card as mentioned before, Eddie Murray has two two diff. record breaker cards, Al Leiter has two picture versions, a checklistcard has a different player(s) on one particular number on the list, K Comstock has a "white letter " version and a regular one. I dont have my Beckett handy so this is not as detailed as could be.
The mass production may still yeild a small challange in getting mint or gem mint copies of all variations. And who knows, perhaps in ten or more years we may wish we bought up some of the unopened material which is now quite cheap !
with and without trademarks in the upper left corner:

I like those Mattingly cards. I have ONE. I did not know about that variation. COOL! I wanted to know about this. I like collecting Mattingly.

So we're talking, like, 75 cents instead of 25 cents?
you only posted 37 cards....what about the other 643?

BTW I need a new Soff from my master set... if anyone has one.
I hope those Bonds cards were in sleeves before you spread them out Las Vegas style on the scanner. I cringe whenever I see handling of raw cards. They should all be in penny sleeves from Ultra Pro Platinums to offer some reasonable protection.

You are so correct! I have a crappy attitude towards these cards that I bought for quarters...not even sure what the card is worth? 2-3 bucks?
Tell you what....as long as I have the box out, I will go thru them and pick out all the ones that even look like 9's and slap a sleeve around them. God, Bonds has really "beefed" up since these pics were taken.
Thanx

<< <i>Now I caused Mike to spend hours and hours searching through Bonds cards and putting them in sleeves. >>
Sounds like fun to me.
