"Conservation" help

Visiting my aunts, I mentioned my collected, and they brought out some coins in an old purse.
The peace and Morgans have a brown slimey film from the leather/vinayl in the purse.

I have some commons in here I can experiment with, but there is an 1892-s that could be 45-60. ( With the huge jumps in price at each step, I don't want to mess up.

Some toning is visable under the crud, but only near edges, possibly cleaned at one point, but no signs of abbration at this point.

I have Dawn, Olive oil, Acetone, Tarn-x and MS-70 at my disposal.

Any help would be appreciated.

Also there is whan 1887 where the 7 is very fat and looks higher, but there is no 6 visable. If it is a 7/6 should I see remnants of the 6?

  • I think that if I were in your position, that I would get the 1892-S to NCS, if I were able to. They can do an evaluation and /or conservation of the coin , if warranted. This should put it in its most valuable state. I do not have the knowledge on the 87/6 coins to advise you.

This is what my dealer told me to do: soak over night in alcohol (rubbing, not boozeimage), any really dirty areas can be gently wiped with a Q-tip. Soak in hot water with Dawn, then rinse with distilled water. Let them dry on a towel, don't wipe them.

If you try this, please try it with common dates first. I have used it on coins, and have never seen any negative results, except it removes any toning.

I agree with beartracks42, send the 92-S to NCS. As far as the 7/6 here is what to look for.

    Thanks all-

I forgot to mention that I did want it to end up in a PCGS tomb, but NGC/NCS it may need to be.
My Aunts would like to sell, and depending on grade, I probably couldn't afford it.

PCGS/NGC seem to command about the same in the market,

If this comes in at a 2000 + coin, any reccomendations on selling stratagies- e-beg, show, large internet house.

Also Thanks for the 7/6 help, it is (But only xf45, maybe 50).

I haven't seen acetone affect anything but oil and dirt.
