The camera is mightier than the eye

I was taking pictures of the coins in my Westward Journey nickel set for my records, and I noticed a faint second "C" over "CENTS" on the reverse of the Philadelphia Keel Boat nickel:

First off, does anyone know what caused this, and has anyone else seen this on this nickel?

After I took this picture, I went back to look at the coin to see how noticable this was. I tried looking at the coin under several different angles and with a 10x loupe, and I couldn't see this extra "C"! I think it's amazing that I was only able to see this when I had taken a picture of the coin...

Thats kinda neat. Like the ghost "D"s on 1997 Lincolns. I'm guessing a flaw in the planchet that is just a touch lighter.

Possibly just a reflection from something in the room?

I don't know too much about these, but the reverse looks excellent compared to the obverse, maybe they just changed the reverse die?------------------------------BigE

  • Yeah, the Philadelphia nickels in my set were pretty crappy -- especially on the obverse.

I doubt it's a reflection of something else in the room -- the size and shape of the phantom letter matches the C in CENTS perfectly.

Is it raised from the surface or incuse?

  • Looks like a stain or discoloration.

Well, I can't really be sure since I can't see it with my eye -- I just have the picture to go off of. But it looks sort of raised to me...

Take another picture and see if it shows up again.....that might rule out a reflection or validate that something is there. image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

  • Seems to me it is more of a "milk mark" similar to those noted...
