I'm not sure on that one. The date looks a little funky. Do you have a closeup?

I was doing some family history research when I stumbled onto the most amazing thing. Reading newspapers, circa 1900, from a small town in Indiana where my family originated, there was a small note indicating that a great-great-great-uncle of mine had an 1895 dollar and was showing it around town, claiming that it was worth $500. Uncle Levi died without children, in the 1940s, and I have no idea what became of his 1895 (or if it was even real). It turns out that 1895s weren't trading for anywhere near $500 at the time (or even $50), and maybe that explains why Uncle Levi wasn't the best businessman, perpetually mortgaging his farm, according to his land title history.

They say some king in the middle east used to own this and it got the scratch from being dropped from one of the great pyramids by accident when it was being wiped.image

I don't mean to be a bad sport and missed the rest of the original thread after my early post, BUT if you just lost maybe $20,000 how would this be funny? (unless it was Russ of course)

From what I hear it is Russ that owns the 95image. This thread is purely light hearted on my part. The owner of that coin in the other thread should be thankful some forum members pointed out those problems and hopefully he can get the coin checked out by some pro's. mike

I think the serifs on the foot of the 1 are not of the proper style.......... in fact, they are missing.......... If someone with Photoshop could enlarge the area, (and maybe circle it) I believe you will see what I'm talking about.......... Of course, grease could have filled the die before striking, smoeone coud have removed them, or this could be a new discovery............. image

I actually did once own an 1895. O mint. Severely cleaned. Came in as part of a collection I bought from an estate.
