Paper loss and PSA grading

I just acquired a 1951 Topps Red Back Sid Hudson as the first card in the newest set I've added to my project list. I'm not looking for anything high grade, I just want the set, and eventually get them all slabbed for protection. Having said that, I was wondering at what point does paper loss drop a card to PSA1, regardless of the rest of the card? I was surprised by how the Hudson looked when I received it, other than the paper loss on the lower edge (I assume from when the panels were torn apart). I'd guess that, with the paper loss not factored in, it was a PSA3-4, which is more than fine with me.

Thanks for any answers anyone can provide.

Can you scan the card and show it to us?

  • Certainly. I at least have the scan from the auction. I have attached it below. I do understand that this card would grade very low. I was just wondering how much of this type of damage will have an effect on grading, and in what degrees. I figured I couldn't go wrong for $3.

Can't see the attachment. Is it ebay? What is the item number?

  • That's odd. So, I uploaded it to my server. And here it is:

That's some righteous paper loss - IMO, this is a "filler" card and not worth having graded by PSA.

  • As I expected, but roughly what percentage less than that would you figure could get by with a 2-3? Like I said, I just want to do the set, I'm not worried about condition. These cards have facinated me since I was a kid. And for $3, I couldn't argue with a card that was over 50 years old.

In general, if you are patient, you should be able to find some really nice looking ex to exmt cards for a reasonable price. A really good source that you can trust is the Pologrounds - he is very trusted and always has nice stuff - tends to overgrade a bit but heck that would be the norm on ebay. Also, 707 Sportscards - Levi Bleam is very good. And finally, Larry Fritsch has a good reputation. IMO, any card that has any paper loss, other than rounded corners, is not worth grading unless it is a very rare or old set like the T3's which if it is a HOF'er - I would accept in pieces!LOL Or, a very expensive card - if I wanted it bad enough to take a PSA 1.
