USPS loses 'RRR' Goetz medal

I bought an 'RRR' Goetz K-643 silver medal week before last from a collector/dealer in the same state. He mailed it a week ago last Monday from 125 miles away and it has never shown up...image

Now, to make matters worse, this guy normally sends everything certified/registered insured....but not this time. He said he knew I wanted it in a hurry so he just sent the medal Priority Mail with a Delivery Confirmation tag. By going to USPS tracking the only record to show up is when they took the package from him on the 15th. and nothing more. Of course it can't be found now and the seller is beginning to think that someone at the P.O. who knows what he deals in lifted the package before it went out.

Hell, I even kicked in an extra $5 to help with the mailing!!! So I am now not only out a large sum of money, but it is unlikely I will see another of these medals up for grabs in my lifetime. image Knowing this guy, I think he's going to try and get me to take half the monetary loss but I don't feel I have any responsibility for the loss. I did my part of the transaction and that was PayPal the required money to him...which I did.

I am just sick about this........image

Although it rarely happens, sometimes the USPS just misplaces mail and eventually turns up. Hope it is, in this case.

  • I have had things show up quite late this time of year from USPS so there's always a chance... But a dealer that wants your business (and dare I say it, ours?) will make this good.

My only losses have both come from France, and they have a history of problems with the mail. My sincere condolences. image

    I feel your pain.
This has happened twice to me. Once with USPS and once with Fedex.
Doesn't paypal refund for items that don't show up?

What'll really suck is if he does want you to share half the loss.image

  • Major bummer! I hope it turns up. You did your part in the transaction and you stand to lose the most. Hopefully it will turn up!

I too am very sorry to hear this cacheman. I don't understand why the guy just didn't insure it. I did this with a ancient greek coin I sold on ebay. It went for a nice sum and the buyer didn't take the offered insurance. So I insured it for my own piece of mind and the buyer paid me back for it. I know the seller knew you wanted it in a hurry but the seller should have been more wise when he sent it to you.

I just received a package that was mailed over 2 weeks ago. I kept looking at the tracking and it showed as being mailed, and just as I was about to go complain to the PO it turned up. So might want to wait another week. If I remember right, the PO makes you wait 30 days til you can file a claim. Hope it turns up image

Nothing again today...it was sent priority and I could have walked it back and forth four times in the amount of time it has been missing. No claim adjustment on this one as the seller didn't insure it....image

Why on earth would he not insure it? If I am shipping something worth >$500 I send it registered and fully insured!

"Why on earth would he not insure it?"

Honestly? I think he was trying to save a penny....like I said, I tossed in $5 to help with the shipping that, with insurance, would have been about $8 total. I found out when I went to the P.O. that he had paid $4.30 to send the packet priority with delivery confirmation. This is the first time he's ever done this and, of course, the package disappears. It wasn't that I wanted the medal immediately...hell, insured/registered/certified all get over the mountain (125 miles) in the same amount of time anyway. image

I would much rather pay more and have my package take an extra day or two than not get it and have no recourse.image

Sorry to see this happen. It makes me sick too. Here's hoping it pops up in a few days. Like many others have said, mail can be lost and then found.

  • I was wondering if my 1935 Canadian Silver Dollar (NGC MS-64) was ever going to show up too. It took nearly a month to get to me from the US to Canada!!! (USPS) It was worth the wait however. It has a booming cartwheel luster. image
  • Thank Goodness!!!
Glad you got it safely. That must have been a relief!
