Does anyone know of any good books/gifts for the budding YN? My Nephew is 8.

I gave him a bunch of circulated coins and he is in love now! Are there any good books or other good gift ideas for Christmas? I know I will be getting him a state quarters folder first of all. I think he will really like that!

  • I think those coin folders with some inexpensive coins is the way to go.
  • Especially some coins that maybe he hasn't seen yet, like wheat cents!
  • How about the book "100 Greatest Coins"

I got my first Red Book when I was 9, and I broke the spine reading it over and over again. The way the book is laid out, with colonial issues leading to minor coins to the big silver issues, it reads almost like a history book. It's what got me hooked to the hobby, and here I am 25 years later still at it.

I would give him a 2005 edition and a few low-grade obsolete issues like an Indian cent or Standing Liberty quarter that he can look up. Follow it up with an afternoon of show & tell with your own collection and he'll be hooked but good. image

Thanks guys! He already has a few wheaties and buffalos from me so I think I'll also get him a coin folder and a few other books. I'll also give him a 2 cent piece and maybe a Kennedy or a Sac I think. I like the 100 greatest coin book idea! (I want that book for myself too...hahah!)

    Thanks again!

For Christmas 1957 when I was 8 years old, my grandfather (who died the following year) gave a Blue Book, a handful of well-circulated Indian Head Cents and a VG 1802 Large Cent and I've been hooked ever since. The Indian cents are gone but I still have that Blue Book and the Large Cent (it's the S-242 variety).

The 100 Greatest book is probably counterproductive for an eight year old. Almost all of those coins are so far out of reach. A RedBook is a good idea, of course. I'd also consider a Jefferson nickel folder because the set can almost be completed from circulation and (for an eight year old) nickels are more affordable. Coin supplies (2x2 holders and pages) are also great.

  • I saw some youth coin books on one of the coin websites (was looking for grandson) - forget now which one ....... was it Jakes? - yes - well here's one - altho I know I saw a couple more someplace - you may try google search on young or youth +coins/coins.

p.s. I also made him up a little package of coins supplies, such as flips, paper coin envelopes, red long coin box, gloves and a few other odds and ends. He LOVED it! I paper clipped some pages in the Redbook for him and told him to read once per week before bed - but not before Bible and schoolwork. image

Another great gift would be a subscription to CoinAge Magazine.

Lots of free material if you get to a coin show early enough.
I have seen free magazines, coin newspapers and even coin boards for state quarters from the PNG.

I put together a gift coin collection that I am selling on ebay starting Thanksgiving. I had a young collector or beginner in mind since a lot of the coins included have been cleaned and/or are circulated Good (on older dates). So I started the auction at $50 for the 53 coins. It won't be online until Thursday night, but you can see a some photos I took of it here: http://tinyurl.com/5yfwh. I'll link it to the auction from that page once it's active. You can also get to it searching my ebay name rmu2867.

I don't intend to ever post sales in this forum but this one seem to answer your question perfectly for what my intentions were when I put this set together. I am not a bulk seller. This is just a one time set I made to get rid of some unwanted coins and find them a new home. It's an honest sale, no mystery coins, no cigar box, fort knox bank, or muddy jar.

Birth year proof and mint sets are always nice gifts. Raw bright and toned coins..........start him/her early on enjoying coins in both states.
