Question on qualifiers

Hi,

I have a card that's a PSA 6 with a MK qualifier. Is the value between a PSA 5 and a 6 or is it closer to 5? Someone please offer some assistance. Thanks,
Steve

  • My understanding is any qualifier is -2 points from the assigned grade on the flip.

Depends on the card for the value actually. If it's a standard issue Topps card for instance, if you go to sell it, you'll probably get somewhere in the vicinity of what a 4 or low 5 would sell for. If it's a rare issue, then it's another story, as the grade will be treated more like an authentication and the scarcity of the card alone will determine it's value.

Valuewise for the card it depends on the type of mark. Certainly ink writing on the front is worse than an erased pencil line on the back - both of which will get a MK qualifier. If selling the card on ebay, you should describe the mark and/or show a clear scan of it.

The 2 point deduction is for Registry calculations only - the market seems to hit qualified cards much more than that. I had a beautiful 1974 Munson card that was slightly diamond cut, it received a PSA 9OC. When I listed it, it took two weeks for it to sell, and even then, it sold for around $20.00. An unqualified 9 would have brought $150.00 easily.

All of the above - a qualifier takes a grade down two points for the registry only. In terms of actual market value, it depends on the card and the mark. There are no valuations rules - a card is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. That relative value usually follows the demand curve, but not always.

In any event, if you list the card on eBay, the MK qualfier is going to draw the most questions - be as specific and descriptive as possible regarding the marking - show a scan if possible. If you don't have a scan, don't say things like "hardly noticeable" or "still a nice card" - the more upfront you are with your description, the more trust you engender, the more action you'll see.

    Good luck.

  • Thanks very much for the answers. The card I'm talking about is the 69 Jackson rookie. It's really nice, I thought it might even get a 7. The mark is light blue, probably an ink one, in the bottom left corner. When I list it, I'm going to supersize the picture.

A side note, I don't know if it's just because I'm a novice, but I look at some of these cards close and I can't tell how would one get a 6 and the other a 7. Sometimes their conditions look the same.

Based on how you described it, in my opinion, you might be better off breaking that particular card out of the holder and listing it raw. You will be lucky to get $40 for it in the holder. Just be sure you describe it and put pictures, but I think you'd wind up getting more for it that way. Those qualifiers are nasty most of the time, especially on a card as common as a mid-grade Jackson rookie, which are always readily available and usually go for under SMR.

Steve - a whole new world opened up for me when I got a 10X loupe. If you loupe enough graded cards, the mystery starts to unravel.

  • Here are the scans. This is my first time doing this so hope it comes out right. The mark is in blue pen, on the back upper right by the cartoon character.

Is that a pen mark I see next to the left arm of the cartoon player standing up?

  • Yeah Mike,

That's how it got the MK qualifier. I'm thinking of just keeping it.
