WOW Artest gone for the YEAR!

Stern booted Artest for the entire season! 8 others got some well deserved bench time in street clothes.

is this the longest in-season suspension? Hockey has had their share of LONG suspensions, but for over 1/2 the season? wow.

I hope he and some of the fans get time. The Oakland county prosecuter is also investigating an incident between O'neal and someone that happened in the tunnel off camera.

Teammates Stephen Jackson received a 30-game suspension, and Jermaine O'Neal, a 25-game suspension. Ben Wallace gets a 6-game suspension. Eldon Campbell, Chauncey Billups and Derrick Coleman, as the Pacers' Reggie Miller each received 1-game suspensions and $35,000 fines for leaving the bench following the initial altercation between Wallace and Artest.

O'Neal and Jackson got off easy here.

Anyone who goes into the stands to pummel the fans deserve the year off, even though some of the Detroit fans may have deserved it.
  • and people always give Ty Cobb gas!
  • I’ve been away for most of this weekend so I’ve only seen the replay once and I’m not sure if I saw the whole thing so please don’t blast me if I got this wrong…

From what I saw, Artest was lying down on a table and a fan nailed him with a bottle (or just water?) and he reacted by going into the stands and punching the man. Obviously he shouldn’t have reacted this way, but the fan did provoke him. Shouldn’t the fan be prosecuted? Furthermore, what if Artest went to that guy’s office (the guy who provoked him) and threw a bottle at him. Would that guy’s boss suspend him for a year if he attacked Artest?

Again, I might not have all the facts straight, but it seems like the fan(s) who provoked them should get criminal charges as well.

They will, the Oakland Prosecutor is going through the films and pictures, and will file warrants after Thanksgiving.
  • Brian,

The fan threw a cup of water/soda/beer at the guy.

All bottles and cups at arenas and ballparks are plastic
    because of these occurences.

Basically, Artest got a shoulder full of liquid. It did not hit
    him in the face.

To Artests credit (if you allow me), he did not go into the stands and
start pummeling someone. The video shows that he just slapped and
then held a person (which also may be the wrong person), but was in
    the neighborhood.

However, Artest is very guilty of inciting a riot. Why the other two
guys with 25+ games suspension didn't get the season for going with
    Artest is beyond me.

In my opinion, someone throwing a plastic cup of liquid should receive
expulsion from an arena with a "stern" warning that if it happens again
you are banned from NBA games for life.

However, what Artest did is inexcusable. It is downright jungle behavior.
Perhaps he can now have a career on the Jerry Springer show.
  • Thanks for the info, my perception of the instigation was a bit too severe. I agree that the other two players should have gotten the same punishment that Artest received. Nevertheless, I was taught to not piss off people bigger than me. The instigating fans must have thought that they're at the zoo and the players are behind cages so I thought it was funny in a sense when players responded by jumping into the crowd after them, and that those little smurks quickly changed into "oh $hit" expressions.

  • ah but the Artest to the stands issue was AFTER his spat with Wallace after the foul... Artest then decided to lay on the table, got hit with a cup of liquid (supposedly beer) and went to the stands and grabbed the wrong guy. (the guy in the blue jersey who jumped on Artest's back once in the stand was the thrower.... THEN after leaving the stands he took a swing at a guy on the floor before finally being escorted out.

he'll get a HUGE fine and probally some jail time... hopefully so does a few fans for starting the issue and ban them for life from the arena. there will be dozens of charges to dozens of people at the end of this... obviously some of the players have some free time now, why not spend it in court. image

I love how there are STILL people here who can back the players here...un-freaking-believable!

Even an ape in a cage at the zoo knows not to go crazy if provoked!

Someone is going to cash in on this!

  • Good. Now all that has to be resolved is his arrest by law enforcement for attacking an innocent fan -AND- his lawsuit he will get smacked with by that innocent fan, and probably a few other people as well.

He wants to be a gangster rapper.....atleast now when he cuts his CD he will have some street credit as a THUG......

Stephen Jackson and Jermaine O'Neal should have been booted for the season also. Probably the only reason they weren't was that it would decimate the Pacers team for 2004-05, and the NBA doesn't want that.

  • What would you do? Ron had just been shoved by the throat...ben wallace calling him names and crap..throwing his towel and headband at him. Trying to battle his teammates and the pacers to get to him. Ben wallace got off...if he shoots his ft's none of this happens...NO HE HAS TO THROW A LITTLE FIT LIKE HE'S STILL IN WHATEVER GHETTO HE CAME FROM..OH AND HIS BROTHERS A LIL PUNK TO...THAT FAT GUY DECKING JONES FOR NO REASON AT ALL. THOSE FANS THAT CAME ON THE COURT GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED. THEY WON'T GET CRAP..READ YOUR TICKET STUB..SAYS YOU ARE NOT TO COME ON TO THE COURT. ANYONE WHO DOES WILL BE EJECTED AND SUBJECT TO ARREST. SO NO CASE THERE. I SAW EVERY VIEW...THERE IS NO WAY JO DECKED ANYONE IN THE TUNNELL. THERE WAS NO ONE! WHEN HE GOT INSIDE THE TUNNELL HE WALKED TO THE LOCKER ROOM. SO THROW THAT OUT THE WINDOW. AND EVEN IF HE DID..IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS WALKING AND SOMEONE TOSSED ANOTHER DRINK ON HIM! IN THE FACE! THAT'S JUST FLAT OUT DISRESPECT...YOU DON'T DO THAT. IT'S AS WORSE AS SPITTING IN SOMEONES FACE! ARTEST SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN THE SEASON. MAXWELL GOT 10 GAMES FOR HITTING 1 FAN...ARTEST HIT 2 AND SHOVED ONE...THAT SHOULD BE 30. NOT THE SEASON. TIME TO APPEAL.

  • What happened between Wallace & Artest is not uncommon in sports. Wallace was out of line, but a suspension would have been handed down after the game if it ended there. The fan who threw the beer is a moron and likely would have been removed and arrested once they determined who it was. What Artest did was out of line... Although it was classless by the fan and warrented legal action, Artest acted as a child would and ran into the stands and put more people at risk. Further, Jackson should have gotten more as his actions indicated he was looking for a fight before Artest ever jumped into the stands. He couldn't wait to follow Artest into the stands and he deserves much of the same punishment. I do believe the fan on the floor should not have been there and the fact that he got hit by Artest in his own fault. The fact that O'Neal came in after and hit him while he was down is wrong, but again the fan never should have been on the floor to begin with (although I am uncertain if he actually had floor seats, but never should have went towards any of the players in the incident). In the end, I believe the suspensions were fair. If someone had actually thrown something dangerous, the punishments might have been different but it was a plastic cup of beer. No danger there... Running into the stands and endangering innocent people by starting a brawl was dangerous and Stern sent the proper message IMO.

  • SKippy... time to take some law classes... just because the fan is not supposed to be on the floor... does not mean that he cant sue... he will deffinately be getting some $$$ if he decides to sue. Nice for Stern to step up, and hand out a huge suspensions.
  • The most amazing thing to me about the incident is that Rasheed Wallace actually behaved and tried to calm players down from both teams.

He actually got the season also, it was later reduced to "only" 68 games.

I agree about Rasheed as well - he showed suprising restraint during the melee.
