A question about First Day of Issue 1979 Susan B. Anthony

My mom gave me the set for doing some computer work for her. I have not really been able to find out much about it. I have all three coins in the set from 3 different mints. They came in this "folder" They are gold plated in the envelope in a little plastic holder. The date on the envelope is marked July 2 1979. I was looking for a value on them and are they worth more in the envelope, or it does not even matter. I just have not been able to pull up much on them. I did a search on it here and found a little about them but not really what I was looking for.
Thanks for the input.

I assume you're talking about three individual envelopes with an address and a
cancelled 15c stamp. They have a picture of the mint building around the coin.

I suspect your's is actually toned as I've never seen one that was plated. These
were made in significant quantities but have likely had a very high attrition. The
coins are sometimes excellent quality but I don't recall having seen any gems in
them. If memory serves there will be an occassional near date.

A believe these are a product of the postal service and the US mint.

  • I posted a pic, Their is a 13 cent and a 6 cent stamp. They are not toned, I wish they were. The toned coins are so pretty. They are gold plated, as far as I can tell.

Also what is a "near date"?

Leave those in the envelopes they are toned not plated first day issue coins. Many of the clad mint set coins also tone to a gold color. I have Ike's and Kennedys that as gold as the new SAC $. If you put those on eBay they will probably bring a nice price if you can get better pictures of them.
  • Well maybe its my mistake then, I thought were plated just because they are gold on both sides and all three of the coins are the exact same. I am still pretty new at coin collection. So I have never see a toned coin that was all one color. I wish I could get a better picture up just to be sure. Well thanks for the all the input. I guess you learn something new everyday.

Be happy they're not plated -- plating destroys a coin's value. No serious collector wants plated coins. Ever see those gold-plated quarters? They're worthless.

That's a nice gift, and yes, you should preserve the coin and envelope -- don't remove the coin and don't bend the envelope. Just leave it as is.

I've never seen this particular envelope. Perhaps it was used in only part of the country
or usually sold to a customer base that is outside the the coin hobby. Or it could have a
low production. This wouldn't necessarily make it valuable but it might be a good idea to
    hang on to it.

  • Can you find any company identifiers on the envelope? Fleetwood is one of the larger ones, but many companies sold such items and some did put gold-plated coins in them. The item is not worth a lot if plated or not. This type of cover has some interest with certain stamp collectors more than coin collectors. As mentioned, the coin is worth a lot less if plated. The 1979 near date can be identified by the date being real close to the rim; it is also known as a wide rim variety.

No their is no other marks on any of the envelope or in the folder. The stamps are different on all 3 envelope. I am kinda happy I posted this here, I usually have very common things that Everyone has seen before. Thanks for all the advice. I was never planning on taking it out of the envelope either. I may be new but I'm not stupid. lol
    Thanks Again
