My New 1935 Connecticut: What a great design! *Grade Revealed*

BaleyBaley Posts: 22,660 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just received this coin, can't stop looking at it! Love the stylized tree with the oversized leaves, and the reverse bears one of my favorite representations of an eagle on any coin. Been wanting one of these for a while, took a long time to find the "right" coin for me. What do you think of this piece? Grade opinions?

Well, looks like this one stumped the forum image Grade revealed on page 2..

    hey Baley

that looks like a lock at MS66 with nice luster, clean fields and an abscence of any visible contacts on the eagle. the strike looks a bit less than full but still nice. i once found a coin that had a gold tone which made the leaves look like late autumn!!!!

I'm with you Baley, I LOVE Connecticut's Comm, and your coin is super. I think I thought I saw that on the market recently (or one like it). The toning by the beak sticks in my mind. Anyway, I don't know the difference between 65 and 66 for one of these, but this one is super and looks all of 66. For that matter, I'm not sure what else this sucker needs to go 67.

It would have been cool if those coins came in proof. I'd love a Conn. Comm. proof.

  • It looks like a brother/sister to one I bought today in a NGC65 holder, so I will say it is a 65.image

  • Looks great from here! I'd guess 66 but would to 67 if you told me it had a thick original skin and booming luster.

Nice, I like that design quite a bit. But then I pretty much like all the classic commems.
  • Gotta get me one of those --- my home state!!! The Charter Oak is super cool -- both on this coin and on the 1999 quarter!!!

I can't see anything that would preclude a grade of MS 66. In fact, if the pictures are at all accurate it could 67. Nice thick luster. Great design too.

Ok, Baley, give it up...what's its certified grade ?

Seems to be some chatter on the wing/shoulder area so my first thought was 64...but I can see the Forum is leaning much higher.
65 would be the tops. Most CT's are 64 or 65. It's a nice design.
Most have had mottled uglyish toning and have been dipped. Attractive orig colors, especially colorful ones, are pretty tough.

That's my opinion. If you are suggesting that it is not 65 or 66, and I detect a hint of something less, it is not apparent from the images. Maybe resubmit this sucker, or sell it to me.

Actually submitting can be a real big hassle -- thing more about selling it to me. image

Thanks again for all your nice remarks about this coin, the grade revealed:

    image

I think they were a little tough on this coin, I feel it is a strong 64 with claims to 65 for nice luster and surfaces, however there is a hairline below TRUST, a few light reed marks well hidden in the tree, as well as one more prominent reed mark on the eagle's wing that kind of blends into the feathers, you can see it a little better in this shot:

Baley I don't care what they graded this nice coin at and to me those are picayune flaws that don't bother me even after you have pointed them out...they seem to blend in well or are nicely hidden...I could live happily with this coin ever after and I'd gladly pay MS 63 money for it.

From the pics, that coin is no less than a 65 on a bad day.

anacs murdered you on that commem.
i,d send it to NGC or PCGS for a second opinion.
  • a lock on a 65, but oh so close on a 66. may still make a 66, because of the great eye appeal.

I've got to go with the BEAR on this one.

Absolutely original and likable even in an upper grade!

No apology coin with definite claims.
    Nice catch!

Baley, is that an older ANACS graded holder with the gold foil seal on the reverse? You can still find lots of those out there that are graded far tougher than current NGC and PCGS standards.

    Baley,

I had to use a magnifying glass on my computer screen to see the reed mark. The fields are so clean its hard to grade a coin like that by its image. I didn't see anything hidden in the tree but I'll take your word for it.

I'd send it into PCGS raw and expect at least a 64 if not a 65 to come back. Nice find !

  • I'd be happy I got a coin that nice in a 63 holder and I would crack it out and submit it to PCGS........an MS64 should be a lock, and a 65 should be possible, but not guaranteed image
  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,660 ✭✭✭✭✭
It appears to be a recent ANACS holder, but it wasn't me who submitted it, so in a sense, I was the one who benefitted by the conservative grade (because the price was commensurate). My intention is to just leave it be and enjoy it for a while, but may someday get another TPG opinion if/when I decide to sell.

Funny thing, though, and this came up in another recent thread: used to be, the grade on a slab represented the minimum guaranteed grade of the coin, and some opinions of the grade could indeed be higher, but you could be pretty sure it wasn't lower.

Nowadays, with the advent of the "crack and resubmit" mentality, the slabbed grade is percieved to mean the maximum grade one could justify awarding to a coin, and more and more, sometimes some people think the actual grade of the coin IS lower than the certified grade.

At this rate, someday all coins will be "maxed out" in their holders. Nice to know we're not there yet image

Newly submitted coins are continually coming back with conservative grades. Out of say 10 coins submitted to PCGS, I wouldn't be surprised if 2 or 3 of them came back at the lowest possible grade they could ever achieve. Those are the ones we would all like to buy. ANACS and NGC do the same thing.

I hate to grade from a photo, but it definately looks 65-66. It is my favorite non-Morgan coin. I find it odd that you like that eagle so much though. To me, the Charter Oak is the best single coin side in history.

63??? If the pic is accurate then that's one seriously undergraded coin.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
