1689 William & Mary Threepence

1689 Threepence, LMV in GVLIELMVS over MVS, ESC-1987a
ESC lists this coin as "Scarce"

I believe they used the (assumed) Bower design until near the end of this reign.

  • Well it's either Bower or Harris.

Most works seem to favour Bower. But one should be aware that Bower i believe died in 1689. So either he engraved a few dies in 1688/9 and they used them for the rest of the reign. Or if they did them each year then someone else did them.

I haven't looked in the Coincraft to see whether the portrait changed or not but i think you are correct in saying it didn't, Maundy (or not as it was cirxculation coinage really) is not my area.

Infact anything not sixpences ain't really my area.

But i think it's safe to say that that is no way a piece of Roettier work. Certainly not James or Norbert.

Although i do wonder if John Roettier may have had a go at these dodgy issues. He had of course crafted most coins from 1662-1688ish. By William and Mary's reign though he had developed a muscle disease which aflicted his hands making it very difficult for him to work, maybe in 1688/9 he was still able to do something of this level with a bit of difficulty.

But in the years afterwards he was crippled.
