A Little Eye Candy for Midgrade Barber Enthusiasts - My Complete Set

I don't have a website up and running yet, and I was bored this afternoon so I scanned my Barber Half set. I know they aren't exactly beaming with full mint luster; but those among us who like the original midgrade look will appreciate them.

    Awesome set Cary!

Actually, it hasn't been too bad really. Of course, I've been a VERY aggressive buyer. It took me exactly 10 months from the first coin purchased (1901) to the last coin purchased (1892-O). I'm still upgrading to more eye-appealing specimens as they come available. There are still a few pieces in the set with questionable toning and/or surface marks too. Eventually, I'd love to have a complete set in XF condition, but that could take a lifetime! I suspect the set will never quite be finished. :-)

That's a very appealing collection. How long did it take to complete it?

    Very nice!

Me too! There's just something about the medium greyish-brown toning that I love. I also like the slight variations in color that Barber Halves seem to take on... from the silvery grey to the darker charcoal grey.

    *** EYE CANDY ! ***

What a great set! That is probably the nicest set I've seen on the board in 3+ years. Thanks for sharing.

The 1907, I do believe, has the quintessential “look” I look for in Barber material...but they're all nice.

Oh man, what a nice run of halves.

Cratylus, I’d love to know what that set cost to build.......whisper it in my ear..

What an incredible set! And built in only 10 months? Have you been doing anything else?

A set like yours has been a goal of mine for the last four years. Although I completed my Barber Half set two years ago, it still has far too many cleaned coins and G/AG coins for which I foolishly settled in my haste. Upgrading is challenging and fun, but slow. I hope to be where you are now in about ten more years.

You mean other than sleeping and searching for Barbers? No! ;-) Seriously though, I assume you mean "anything else numismatic." The answer is "No." Putting this set together has been my sole numismatic passion since I started. Now that it's completed, I've been upgrading where I can. I've also delved a little bit into the Quarters and also Seated Halves. But neither of them interests me to the degree that the Barber Halves do. Can't really explain it.

Send me a PM with a list of the coins you'd like to upgrade. I will add it to my want list that I take with me to coin shows. I can help you in your search if you'd like.

  • BEAUTIFUL set, what would they grade by pcgs.
PCGS sets under The Thomas Collections. Modern Commemoratives @ NGC under "One Coin at a Time". USMC Active 1966 thru 1970" The real War.
  • Realistically, the coins in the set are all within the VF-XF range. On a very good day at PCGS, a few would possibly grade out at AU50. On a very bad day at PCGS, a couple of the coins might only get a F15 grade.

What a set Cary, and you only did it in 10 months!! I remember well, you telling my you were starting, and me feeling sorry for you and your long and arduous task ahead.

I saw that you had the set for sale on the Buy/sell board, and I went and lit some incense and prayed to the Barber God that you might come to your senses! Lucky for you the Barber God finds favor with me and now and then. image

If I am not mistaken that 97-S was once in my set? I also really like the 1903, that is a really tough date to find in original midgrade.

    Tyler

P.S. I know how hard it can be to scan complete Dansco pages of coins, and from experience I can tell you that the scans are NEVER as nice as the coins in person, so they must look awesome staring back in natural light.

P.S.S. The 98-o Micro o makes the set unique, throw in the 92-O micro o and Eliasberg would go red in the face with embarrasment at his puny numismatic achievement! image
  • You're right, Tyler! Scanning the pages is a real b_tch!!! Just when I get most of the coins to look right, a few of the others look like total sh_t!!! And then you fix the bad looking ones, and a few of the others look crappy now! I finally gave up and just posted what came out of the scanner! Not to mention, scanning individual coins can be a pain in the arse as well. No matter how nice a coin looks in person, sometimes it just doesn't scan well at all.

Not sure about the 97-S. I got it from an East Coast collector who sold off his collection. Perhaps he got it from you originally. And yes, the 1903 is a very tough midgrade date to find nice. When I found that one, I nearly had an accident in my pants! Here's a close up of it:

If only all the coins in my set looked that nice!

WOW - That is a beauty alright!

Here is a pic I took when I owned six midgrade 97-S coins. Check out the bottom right 97-S. I bought it from Steve Estes about 2 years ago as part of a large set of coins he sold off from a lifelong Barber collector. I have since upgraded mine to the only original XF I have come across (the middle left coin).

Sorry Cary - I just had a flash of memory. The top right 97-S came from Steve Estes, and the bottom Right 97-S (your coin) came from Harry Laibstain which I think was owned by Peter Shireman.

    Tyler
  • That has to be the same coin:

  • Tyler,
I know your website has a lot of photos on it, some of coins you no longer own. I would love to see pitcures of your current primary set. I need something to aspire to. ;-)

    Yep,

I do recognize that 97-S half. Bought it raw, perhaps from JJ Teaparty and then got it slabbed, and now it's made the rounds and unslabbed again. Beautiful coins Cary.
