A Little Eye Candy for Midgrade Barber Enthusiasts - My Complete Set

I don't have a website up and running yet, and I was bored this afternoon so I scanned my Barber Half set. I know they aren't exactly beaming with full mint luster; but those among us who like the original midgrade look will appreciate them.

Actually, it hasn't been too bad really. Of course, I've been a VERY aggressive buyer. It took me exactly 10 months from the first coin purchased (1901) to the last coin purchased (1892-O). I'm still upgrading to more eye-appealing specimens as they come available. There are still a few pieces in the set with questionable toning and/or surface marks too. Eventually, I'd love to have a complete set in XF condition, but that could take a lifetime! I suspect the set will never quite be finished. :-)

Me too! There's just something about the medium greyish-brown toning that I love. I also like the slight variations in color that Barber Halves seem to take on... from the silvery grey to the darker charcoal grey.

What a great set! That is probably the nicest set I've seen on the board in 3+ years. Thanks for sharing.
The 1907, I do believe, has the quintessential “look” I look for in Barber material...but they're all nice.

A set like yours has been a goal of mine for the last four years. Although I completed my Barber Half set two years ago, it still has far too many cleaned coins and G/AG coins for which I foolishly settled in my haste. Upgrading is challenging and fun, but slow. I hope to be where you are now in about ten more years.

You mean other than sleeping and searching for Barbers? No! ;-) Seriously though, I assume you mean "anything else numismatic." The answer is "No." Putting this set together has been my sole numismatic passion since I started. Now that it's completed, I've been upgrading where I can. I've also delved a little bit into the Quarters and also Seated Halves. But neither of them interests me to the degree that the Barber Halves do. Can't really explain it.

I saw that you had the set for sale on the Buy/sell board, and I went and lit some incense and prayed to the Barber God that you might come to your senses! Lucky for you the Barber God finds favor with me and now and then.
If I am not mistaken that 97-S was once in my set? I also really like the 1903, that is a really tough date to find in original midgrade.

P.S. I know how hard it can be to scan complete Dansco pages of coins, and from experience I can tell you that the scans are NEVER as nice as the coins in person, so they must look awesome staring back in natural light.
P.S.S. The 98-o Micro o makes the set unique, throw in the 92-O micro o and Eliasberg would go red in the face with embarrasment at his puny numismatic achievement!
Not sure about the 97-S. I got it from an East Coast collector who sold off his collection. Perhaps he got it from you originally. And yes, the 1903 is a very tough midgrade date to find nice. When I found that one, I nearly had an accident in my pants! Here's a close up of it:

Here is a pic I took when I owned six midgrade 97-S coins. Check out the bottom right 97-S. I bought it from Steve Estes about 2 years ago as part of a large set of coins he sold off from a lifelong Barber collector. I have since upgraded mine to the only original XF I have come across (the middle left coin).

I do recognize that 97-S half. Bought it raw, perhaps from JJ Teaparty and then got it slabbed, and now it's made the rounds and unslabbed again. Beautiful coins Cary.
