How much do you nominally discount NTC?

Buy the coin, not the holder. Given a coin on eBay, how much does everyone nominally discount a NTC grade. Two points, three points, less, more? I'll probably pass on a bid but it appears that this seller (PM me if you want to know the seller) just sells NTC but has perfect feedback, offers a return, etc.

Depends on the coin... if it's something rare/valuable, usually I'll just figure there's something very wrong with it.

It is not the overgrading that concerns me, it is the slabbing of problem coins without it being noted on the label. I am far more concerned about cleaned/whizzed/tooled/counterfeit coins than I am with a excessively high grade. Therefore I will treat all coins in their holders as raw. When you see a valuable coin in one of their holders, i.e. raw, you have to ask yourself "Why is this not in a slab?"

  • I don't touch them over the internet. If I had the coin in hand and could assess it's condition myself them maybe. I would typically think 1 to 2 grade points off from PCGS or NGC though.....

After buying quite a few, and viewing quite a few more, I've concluded that NTC should not even be considered to be a grading service, but rather just a fancy holder. If I were collecting expensive coins or rarities, I would never buy anything holdered by them.

As far as my collection, No NTC coin will ever reside thier.

I see NTC coins on ocassion, and most are overgraded, have problems or just down right suck. As far as internet purchases, I would never buy one with out having it in hand to view very carefully. Its not the grading that scares me as I can grade myself as it is the authenticity or other surface, rim /edge problems that have been concealed or disquised by the holder.

Once in a while, one (usually circ) will pop up that is accurately graded and even nice for the grade, and if its a date I can use, and priced fair, Ill get it, then break it out. The last one I bought was for a local Walking Liberty collector who is on a budget, picked up a nice 1917-s Obv graded F-15, it looked original, and actually quite nice. We broke it and I submitted to PCGS at his request and it came back F-15 as I anticipated.
