newbie question

I have a 1909 VDB Lincoln that I think is a proof. How can I tell for sure? Thanks.

Welcome...why do you think its a proof?
  • Not, I think ,send it to anacs or pcgs for grading ,if you want to be sure
  • Details are so sharp. No dings. Verrry RED.

    Welcome.

Your coin does not appear to have the detailed strike, the surface texture or the squared rims/edges that would be seen on a Proof example.

Just for your info a proof of that date is worth over $1000.00 dollars. I don't think it would be in a cardboard 2x2. the coin you have is still rare and very collectable but probably not a proof.

  • Can I submit it to pcgs withut joining the "club"?

You can join silver for free, but it will cost you alot about $32 to send that coin in...where as if you joined it would be 16...depends on how many coins you want to send in.

I would suggest sending it to ANACS for verification. Only costs $20 plus shipping there and back, for their 5-day service (Don't skimp and go for Economy... Economy over there is up around 3 months wait time) And you'll get your coin back in 2-3 weeks, and you'll know that it's a proof. Then if it's a proof, and you want to sell it, send it to PCGS. If you don't want to join the club, you can submit through an authorized dealer. There are plenty of dealers on here that I would recommend as being extremely honest and trustworthy that you could submit the coin through. For example, Mark Feld (coinguy1)

    Welcome to the boards.

Many mint state 1909 VDB's have exceptional details and, to less experienced eyes, will appear to be proofs. I doubt your coin is any different, but new discoveries are made from time to time so it isn't out of the question. For any of us to say with any certainty, give us a much closer image.
